Homecoming NoBoost; HawksStumble, 26-7by DWIGHT B. ESAUSurprise! Surprise!Goliath Harper College threw a little football party Saturday night, expecting to have some fun with little Concordia of Milwaukee and add some more luster to a 'until then) successful season. But the surprising Falcons rudely turned on their hosts and ruined the Hawks’ second homecoming. 26-7. The discourteous visitors even added insult to the whole affair when they stole the ball from a frustrated Hawk ball carrier in the third quarter and ran to the clinching touchdown. We still can’t find that consistency on offense which we need, was the way Coach John Eliasik explained H. We made some adjustments in the second half and got some more yardage hut we just couldn't sustain a drive. Something always happens. The Hawk defense played reasonably weU against a surprisingly well-coordinated Falcon offense, but the offense couldn’t give them much help.Eliasik tried an audible system, he said, in which plays for the most part were called at the line of scrimmage depending on what defense the Falcons were in. They were changing defensive formations on us. and so we thought we could rim on them by adjusting our play selection at the last minute according to what formation they presented to us It worked somewhat, but our execution broke down and mistakes hurt us bad.We figured we could beat these guys, but they made far fewer mistakes and deserved to win. Take nothing away from them, he concluded. The mistakes” mainly were 14 penalties for an incredible 147 yards assessed the Ilawks. plus a key lost fumble, and three interceptions. Also, quarterbacks Bob Jorgensen and Ken Leonard, who al-ternated signal-calling this night, frequently couldn’t find open receivers as they desperately tried to avoid an extremely hard rush by the hustling Fal-To show you how frustrating it was, the Hawks getting it together a bit in the second half, ran off 50 plays in the final two quarters to only 10 for Concordia. They outgained the conservative Falcons by the astounding total of 225 yards to 7, yet couldn’t score and make the game interesting. Here’s the way things went:Jorgensen s first pass was intercepted by Concordia end Luther Burnette and the Falcons, using slants and traps, went 63 yards in eight plays. Rice hit Gary Moilanen in the end rone for the final 18 yards when the Falcons flooded a rone and got a man open.On the next series. Ken Memken fumbled on the Harper 45 and Falcon Rich Shellhamer returned it to the Hawk 16. On the first play. On the nine 8 plays later. Jorgensen hit Tom Rambo in the end zone and Hawk fans had visions of a comeback.Rambo didn’t encourage them, however, when he slammed the ball into the turf after his TD catch and the Hawks had to kick the ensuing kickoff from their 25. The Falcons, turned opportunists again, got the bail on the Hawk 45 and took it in with three plays. Rice hit Mark Herzog, who grabbed the pass away from a lunging Bob Kruse, for a pretty 31-yard play. The Hawks came out rolling in the third quarter, driving 57 yards to the ’Falcon 11. only to see Jorgensen sacked on a fourth down pass play. Later in the half, the Hawks were stopped on the Falcon 7 yard line three times as pass plays failed. Once Concordia defenders tossed Leonard for a big loss and twice they intercepted Jorgensen passes.Only one consolation: The Hawks out-gained the Falcons 319 to 234 and out-passed them 160 to 69. Jeff Johnson led Hawk ball carriers with 60 yards, and Jorgensen rolled up 93 yards passing. But those penalties, interceptions, and broken plays hurt, especially since they must be eliminated in catch-up footballThis Saturday it’s Illinois Valley Col-lege at Rolling Meadows High School as the Hawks try to stay on the winning side.
