Sioux City “Black Raiders” To Play Here Friday NightBmmetsburg’s mighty Madden-men are building up their defensive ■wall to withstand the invasion, Friday night, of the “Black Raiders” from- East High, Sioux City.Bouncing back from a narrow defeat tfj the Spirit Lake Indians the courageous Irish are looking forward to the contest with blood in their eyes, but they will be without the sendees of Jolting John Parish, left halfback * on Jack North's 1940 All-State Second team as well as last year’s All-Conference back, who suffered a tom ligament in his leg Friday night. Due to the versatility of all the players, the- team can be juggled so that the weakness will not be too great, fled Houts is also on the disability . list but Coach Madden believes .that the veteran left tackle will be in there fighting with the rest.of the boys.Fuels on the MaddcnmenE. H. S., last year’s Lakes Conference Champs, plays football in a community that likes its football tough. Forty-eight of the 270 enrolled are out for football. Five of the Maddenmen placed or received mention on the 1940 All-Conference team and ten of the boys are lettermen. The line averages 159 and the backfieid 160. This is Coach Ellwood Madden’s third season at Emmetsburg. Coming here to find. a team lacking in experience he has lost only five games and. has developed seven boys who ranked on one of the All-State teams. Last year his boys went through the season undefeated and with only six points chalked up against them. Emmetsburg's record; this year shows two victories over. Sheldon and Algona and two defeats lost by narrow margins toLake Mills and Spirit Lake.Facts on the Black RaidersNinety-five of the 840 enrolled in East Senior High are out for football. They are divided into squads of thirty boys, each playing a schedule of 5 to 10 games. This is their sixteenth team and of these Coach Les Davis has handled fifteen winning 90 per cent of all the games. Eighteen former Black Raiders are now playing on university and college teams. East High has won from Leeds, Trinity of Siox City, Abraham Lincoln of Council Bluffs and Mason City but have been defeated by Lincoln High of Nebraska.
