Minooka will be trying to string a second straight win Saturday when it travels tovLemont in Northeast Conference football. The Indians, who defeated Dwight 12-8 last week, have their work cut out with Lemont. Minooka and Lemont hold identicial 2-1 records in the conference and 3-2 overall Lemont last year had the second best record with a 6-2 mark This year quarterback Rick Jay poses a problem for Minooka.“He is a real fine athlete,” said Beck “He goes about 6-0, 190 pounds We saw him against Wilmington when Lemont won 14-0 and he threw the ball 20 timesLast week he threw 30 times in the game. Ken Kaupas, a 6-0, 180-pound split end is his main target.”Minooka will have a different starting quarterback against Lemont because recent signal -caller Dave Bretsch jammed a thumb Wednesday in a physical education class.Lee Hull, the strapping transfer student from Texas, will play quarterback, theposition he held for Minooka’s first two games. Hull has completed eight of 22 passes for 110 yards. He has one touchdown pass and four interceptions.Discussing offensive strategy, Beck said the option will be part of the arsenal as it was ran last week when Minooka rushed for 245 yards. “We hope to use a lot of traps toe. Lemont usually plays a 6-2 which should open the outside up,” he saidThe Indians hope to capitalize on Lemont’s willingness to play the middle by springing Bruce Miller and Mark Mitchell through the tackle and end gaps.Miller, an all-conference candidate, has gained 564 yards in 120 carries for a 4.7 yards-per-carry average Beck said his runningbacks may also be used as receivers for the short flare pass or the screen pass situations Mitchell has good credentials at the other running position with 246 yards in 49 carries for a 5.0 average per carry. The leading receiver forMinooka is end Terry Glennon who has eight grabs for 137 yards and one touchdown, a 17.1 average per catchOn defense linebacker Mitchell leads the club with 52 solo tackles, including four sacks, and 22 assisted tackles. Dennis Geiss has 35 tackles and 27 assists. Brad Immel has 28 solo bring-downs and 20 assists. Glennon has two pass interceptionsIn preparing for Lemont,Beck said Minooka will run basically the same plays it’s run during the season.Lemont has been strong in scoring with 114 points in five games, a 22 8 scoring average per game. Minooka has scored 67 points and given up the same total in its five games. In comparing common opponents this year, Lemont beat Wilmington 14-0 where Minooka beat Wilmington 6-5. Lemont lost to Lisle 42-6 where Minooka lost 33-0.Since Minooka and Lemont share third place, the NEC focus tonight will be on the Lisle versus Plano game at Plano featuring the top two teams.“Just from what I’ve seen and the fact we played Lisle I’d have to take Lisle,” predicted Beck. “Plano will have to play an outstanding game to get them ”For the sake of league balance (Lisle has won 21 straight) Beck said he wants Plano to win. “That would throw the conference up for grabs,” he said.Since Minooka cannot finish with an 800 win percentage with its two defeats, the only way it could earn the state playoffs is by virtue of winning or tying for the NEC title.Chances seem slim however because even if Plano were to beat Lisle and Minooka to later beat Plano, Lisle and Minooka could have similar records at the end of the season. If records break ties then Lisle's 33-0 winover Minooka would probably give them the edge.Lemont is plenty to worry about. The Injuns have a coupleplayers over the 200-poundmark and overall size “in the 190 range,” according to Beck, which gives them an advantage in this respect.
