Mitchell’s Tom Dawkins set an early pace over the first half of the course with a time of slightly over five minutes.Dawkins was trailed by Tony Clark of Wingate and Lonnie Goodman of Mitchell at the midway point. However, the extra experience and conditioning of the Wingate team began to tell the difference over the second half of the race.At the end of the two-mile mark Clark and Tommy Cox had opened up a one-two lead for Wingate, with Danny Capps closing in on Dawkins. Over the last three-tenths of a mile, Dawkins dropped to fourth with Goodman maintaining fifth.At the finish line it was Clark, Cox, and Capps of Wingate followed by Dawkins and Goodman of Mitchell in the front five.The second five including J. W. Britton of Wingate, Ed Lynch of Mitchell, James Bond-urant, Billy Cammeron of Wingate, Joe Townsend of Mitchell. Rounding out the race were John Harris, Larry Marlin, and Richard Foster of Mitchell, Clyde Bailey of Wingate, and Smitty Bolick, Jimmy Chilton, and Pat Myers of Mitchell.Phil Pletcher is coach of the Mitchell team while Tom Faul-kenberry guided the Wingate squad.
