She doesn’t ask for praise, or expect it. But the senior soccer star at Oak Hill High School certainly deserves it.Vargo is the first player in Red Devil girls soccer history to play on the team for all four years of its existence. That is impressive enough, but she hasn’t just played on the team for four years. She has also been the. team’s leading scorer every single season.“I was practically born on a soccer field,” Vargo said. “I grew up watching my brother Justin play soccer, and I have been playing for as long as I can remember.”Vargo played in recreational leagues in the area as she was growing up, but she credits her brother for teaching her many of the fundamentals of the game.“He would go outside and kick the ball around with me when we were younger,” sheMD Morgan/The Register-HeraldDEVIL WITH THE REDSHORTS: Senior Courtney Vargo, in her fourth year ir) Oak Hill’s starting lineup, is also in her fourth season as the team’s leading scorer.recalls. “He taught me how to be tough, and helped me to be more aggressive. He also taught me how to kick the ball better.”She learned to kick it well enough to lead her team to an 8-4-2 start this year, and the hope of advancing far in the state tournament.“Our team feels like we can go as far as we want to this year,” she said. “There will be some tough games in our section, and probably Woodrow will be the toughest, but any team can win on any given day.”Vargo has found success on the soccer field, but that isn’t the only arena in which she has been able to excel. She is the Red Devils’ co-head varsity cheerleader, and is also an avid tennis player. She has qualified for the state tennis tournament for the past three years in a row in doubles tennis, and last year she qualified for the state in singles tennis.“Our family used to just go out and hit around on the tennis courts,” Vargo said. “I started just doing it for fun, but I began to get better at it, and so I started playing competitively.”Vargo’s competitive spirit is evident when it comes to athletics, but in the classroom, she continues to achieve her goals. A 4.0 student, Vargo says that studying comes first for her every evening. ,“As soon as I get home from practice, I start studying,” she said. “I barely find time to eat and sleep, because studying is my main
