Cheruiyot breaks four minute mark in mileFREDERICK, Md.—Charles Cheruiyot, a sophomore at Mount Saint Mary’s and Olympian from Kenya, broke the course record in the Market St. Mile on Saturday morning in Frederick, Md. with a time of 3:58.47. His time is only the third sub-four minute mile ever run outdoors in Maryland. Approximatley 300 runners in seven heats competed in the Mile.Charles’ twin brother, Kip copped second place just behind his brother in 4:00.1. Last year, Kip won the race with Charles claiming second. According to reports, this was a mild upset because Charles is more a long distance runner while Kip is a 1500 meter runner.The winner of the women's race was Maria Pazarentzas, from Hagerstown. Md.. who also ran a course record by crossing the finish line in 4:55.5. Second place was claimed by Chris Anderson-Curley. who is a graduate of Mount Saint Mary’s and is currently a medical student at East Tennessee State University. She finished with a time of 5:07.6.
