uI^ate Thursday night Manager Stewart, of the Massillon Tigers, made the statement to a News representative that “if Canton decides not tx play Massillon on Thanksgiving day, the whole deal for a number of games between the two teams will be called off.”Rather an inconsistent, not to say insane statement, when Manager Stewart has known for a week or more that the Canton team had closed a contract with the Eatrobe, Pa., team to play at Canton on Thanksgiving day. What for all these meetings, these letters and messages, the Tiger representatives have sent to Canton proposing meetings? Why should they endeavor to secure games with Canton prior to the big day; even come down off their high horse of demanding the big share of the receipts and agree to divide everything equally? It seems that the Massillon Tigers, the self-acclaimed world’s champions —the victorious Tigers, really feel a vague fear within them, when a meeting with the redoubtable Canton aggregation is mentioned. The strong galaxy of national stars that Coach “Blondy” Wallace has gathered about him, forming the Canton eleven, has brought fear to the hearts of the Mas-no; we will meet you or we won't? That would really be the best thing to do, Mr. Stewart!Canton Plays at Mounds-ville, W. Va.,Today and at Toledo on Sunday. Three dates in it are marked “open,” including Thanksgiving day. Pray, whom do they exiect to play on these dates? Perhaps they will play tue Massillon Independents, the Tindall Timers or some Massillon amateur aggregation. A fourth date, Wednesuay,October 27 la marked “lAtrobe, ’ with aquestion mark behind it. Canton’s contract with l^itribe says that the Pennsylvania team shall not play the Tigers. but only Canton. This leaves lour dates for the Tigers to fill. On October 31 the team is supposed to play at Cleveland. Again we ask, who will they play? Why not announce the name of the team. Surely It la not the Carlisle Indians for they have announced they will not play professional teams. Perhaps some Cleveland amateur or high school team.It i* admitted everywhere, however, that Canton and 1 strobe, playing at Athletic park, will draw an enormous crowd, surpassing any crowd the West End City can turn out. no matter w hat team they secure as opponents. It would give Manager Stewart’s stock quite a boost both in Massillon and Canton should he come to the front and make some sort of a permanent arrangement with Canton.
