LEGIONNAIRES 1 MOVE TO TAKE PHILADELPHIA _IShock Troops from All States Overrun the City.MIAMI WANTSNEXT MEETPres. Coolidge Lauds Plan To Get Out Voters.Philadelphia, Oct. 11.—(AP)—Legionnaires began their big offensive against Philadelphia today as the eighth annual convention of the American Legion got under way.The shock troops from every state overran the city ami as the official communique might phrase it, the Philadelphia sector was captured without casualty.Amid the blare of bugles, the thumping of*drums and the shouts of greeting by former comrades who 1 lined the streets, thousands of delegates marched through the city from tthe railroad stations and steamship I docks to their headquarters in the ' Atlantic budding.A busy week was ahead of the delegates. First on the programme today was the annual report of .John R. MeQuigg, national commander and an address by Wilder Metcalf, chairman of the national finance committee of the Ix'gion. Questions of policy regarding the Legion’s major activities for the coming year will be tlecided. The election of a new national commander and the decision as to whether the 1027 convention shall ne held in Paris were other important questions to he decided.Miami, Fla., is a candidate for. the 1928 meeting and the Florida delegation is concentrating a lively campaign. Attired in white flannels, orange colored overseas caps, white shoes and walking sticks, the southerners march through the streets with all sorts of banners setting forth their claims.“Miami may be down, hut she’s never out,” reads one of the banners. “Come to Miami for the tenth annual convention in 1928.”A number of prominent men are scheduled for addresses during the week, among them being Vice President Charles G. Dawes, United States Senator David A. Reed and Governor Pinchot of Pennsylvania; Major General John A. LeJeune, commandant of the United States marine corps, and K. M. Landis, baseball commissioner.
