MGBAND {Unlfed Press Staff Correspondent) PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 11—(U.fi) —Flag bedecked'—proud In theconsciousness of her patriotic traditions—Philadelphia today washost tq the American Legion for its eighth annual convention.More than 100,000 of those who answered the call to the colors in the World war, and their friends, wore r mobilized in the hospitable atmosphere of the Quaker city; billeted in her homes, which were thrown open to them, parading her streets made festive for them; with their banners, their uniforms, j their bands, making one of the ! greatest and most picturesque ! conventions in her history.By boat and train and antomo-! bile the veterans for the past 24 I h%urs have poured in their friendly invasion; by sqtias, companies and almost by regiments they have garrisoned the -* city from every state in the union and from three foreign countries^ fDistinguished guests. - including Vice President Gharlea G. Dawes. Judge 2C AT. Landis. Admiral Counts, General Frank T. Hines, of the Veterans bureau,^and Major General John A. Lejeune, commandant ot’ the marine corps, were in attendance at the convention and will make addresses.As each delegation arrived here they were met at stations and docks by girts, members of the ladies auxiliary of the Legion, and by William Penns’ who served to guide the visitors to their hotels and homes reserved for their ace cm modation.Eight thousand members of the ladies auxiliary and the 14,000 members of the “40 and S‘T are holding their conventions In connection with ihe Legion sessionsDistinguished visitors were mef on arrival by an honor escort of the marine corps reserve and members of a reception committee.The Logic pa ire* have been welcomed to tlie. state through an official proclamation issued by Governor pinchot. welcoming them to “the shrine of American liberty you fighters have labored so hard a ml sacrificed so ttnaiint-Ing-Jy to preserve.The Merchant* and Miners Steam Ship company liner Dorchester was? due to dock today from Boston bearing more than 1,060 veterans as the New England delegation to the convention.,In addition, a veterans* special train was run here from Boston. From the far south a brilliantly painted Todomotive bearing a Legion today^ drew infoBroad stree^^Std^ion drawing a long string of car# filled with Florida L^gionhires; and in the baggage cur, I ended by capable-grooms, the Florida veterans' famous yellow horse.The Georgia delegation, several hundred strong, headed by State Commander Emory* p. Bass, .also arrived on a special train today, Western Pennsylvania Legion posts, on a special assembled at Pittsburgh, arrived here last night. Others from Minnesota. Missouri., Chicago, Detroit, and other western cities came in on special trains. Automobile parties from as far west as California and Oregon have already checked in at i various state headquarters. and i hundred* are reported still en route, arriving here today and to-i. morrow.
