Grand National Stars Join MartinsvilleModified-Sportsman Cardinal 500 FieldMARTINSVILLE — With the, Harris, Tommy Ellis ar,d de-NASCAR Grand National stars! fending champion Sonny Hut-scheduled for a weekend off, chins of Richmond Richie several of them will move into Panch of Daytona Beach, Fla.; another type of racing in Sun- Bosco Lowe of Fletcher, N.C.,day’s $31,630 Cardinal 500 Classic at Martinsville Speedway.The race is a NASCAR National Championship double-header with a 250-lap Modified event and a 250-lapper for Late Model Sportsman cars, paying the winner of each event $2,000 plus qualifying and special awards and 350 national championship points. There also is a $1,000 bonus in each race for the driver who leads the most laps.Buddy Baker of Charlotte, N. C., Lee Roy Yarbrough of Columbia, S.C., and Benny Parsons of Ellerbe, N.C., are entered in the sportsman event. Baker will drive a Ford owned by W. C. Donlavey, Jr., of Richmond, Yarbrough will drive a Chevelle owned by Don Beverley of Richmond and Parsons will be in the Bobby Allison Chevelle, purchased last week by John Dodson of Chesterfield. Allison’s late model sportsman car won seven races and over $30,000 this season.The Grand National stars will be facing a potent field that includes Ray Hendrick, MelJimmy Griffin of Eden, N.C., Bill Dennis of Glen Allen, Len-nie Pond of Petersburg, A1 Grinnan of Fredericksburg, Reds Kagle of Danham, Md.,national point leader Jack Ingram of Asheville, N.C., Johnny Allen of Greenville, S.C., Jimmie Hensley of Martinsville and Canadians Jean Paul Cabana and Andre Manny.The combined entry list is expected to reach 180 cars and drivers from 15 states and Canada aLready are represented. Oniy the fastest 40 cars will start in each race with time trials for sportsman cars onThursday, modified on Friday and four 25-lap qualifying races on Saturday deciding the starting lineups.The modified battle shapes up as a race within a race with the new Pintos, Vegas, and Gremlins dueling the old coupes.Among the favorites in the modified race are Hendrick, Bernie Miller of Canastota, N. Y., defending national champion Jerry Cook of Rome, N.Y.,three-time national champion Carl “Bugs” Stevens of Reho-both, Mass., Leo Cleary of Han-over, Mass., Ed Flemke of Southington, Conn., Geoff Bo-, dine of Chemung, N.Y., Perk Brown of Eden, N.
