i (Sumner News)Has a good name as a baseball pitcher, but when he is brought up before the courts some dailies head the item, Bad Boy, and that he!j* to [suggest that there is something in a n^xne.Grover Cleveland Alexander was respected here, when had one of our own pitchers allowed the hits he did! there would have been sarcasm and | ! ridicule.It is to the public credit that he was respected. It is fine to repeatthat the lads as well as grown ups remembered his pitching record and gave him respect though our boys were let down more doubtless than had they had their regular pitcher. So this is no attempt to censure the Bad Boy headline.I ' But it is a great thing to present that before the Sumner News comment was not all out to the public the daily papers brought the announcement that Grover was a bad boy.i The great part of it is the lesson. No. I’m not glad. But the point is ; that if a man whose record is so great that respect is his when he does not play up or is still his when he stumblest there is to the youth the fact that since a man with a strong arm and capable mind cannot control his liquor habit, what is the sense in the ordinary lad cultivating the habit?It may be smart to take a drink and get happy, it may be. I doubt it. but it may be smart. But when | 40 or more and the habit has con- : trol, axe any of these youth going to be stronger to give up than is Grover Cleveland Alexander? jWe read in the locals that his! mother was here. How about moth- | erf now? Your mothers? Howj about mother, the wife and children | and other near and dear relatives: when 30 or 40 and unable to control the liquor habit, which now has control upon these lads of communities about us?And when the dailies, usually after news without sentiment or favor, head the law breaking item, Bad Boy—What a heart breaking thought that heart breaking talking brings to the mother. Bee? He has been so high that the dailies respect his name and haa fallen so hard that the courts must call him down, And the news published throughout the world. v
