The Chicago Track Club runners won the six-mile event, followed by Indiana, Kentucky, Western Kentucky and Auburn.Tiger cross country coach, Jerry Smith, said that he was pleased overall with Saturday’s results. “This was a good meet for us,” he said. “All of the guys that competed for us last year improved their times and places this year.“We were disappointed, however, over the fact that we didn’t beat Kentucky because we know that they’re going to be one of the strong teams in the SEC championship meet. We purposefully scheduled the strong conference teams in early meets this year so it would give us experience against them,” he added. The Tigers have already defeated strong contenders Alabama and Georgia in previous meetings this year.Auburn’s Baker, a junior-college transfer from Williamsport, Md., paced over the rolling terrain of the six-mile Indiana course in 30:42, placing him eighth in the 162-man field.Sophomore Jon Fox was second for Auburn in 15th at 30:59. Freshman Rick Musick was 21st in 31:21. SophomoreLes Porterfield, who ran the course over three minutes faster than last year, was 38th in 31:56, and senior Neil Murphy rounded out the Tiger scoring in 40th at 58.The Tigers’ next meet will be Oct. 18 at Greenville, S.C.,in the Furman Invitational.
