The early season success of coach John Jar-dine’s Badgers was due in great measure to the performances of former Chicago area prep players.Jardine, a Chicagoan himself and a former Catholic league player and coach, recruited heavily in the Chicago area. It paid off handsomely, although Wisconsin dropped its game Sept. 28 against the University of Colorado in a close game played in the thin, mountain air of Boulder.Big Ten opponents that He ahead are Ohio State, Oct. 12, and on successive Saturdays Michigan, Indiana, Michigan State. Iowa, Northwestern and Minnesota.The fortunes of the Badgers in the Big Ten race with its reward of a trip to the Rose Bowl will depend on a number of proven players from the Chicago area, including five lettermen from last season.They are tailback Bill Marek (St. Rita), flanker-back Jeff center Joe Mack (Farragut), Norwich (St. Rita), defensive end and linebacker Matt Zakula (Marist) and offensive tackle Dennis Lick (St. Rita).Mack and Zakula are seniors, the others juniors who proved themselves as outstanding sophomores. An exception is Southsider Nick Fedorenko, a No. 2 tackle as a junior who gradauted from St. Francis de Sales.It’s ironic because Notre Dame ha*, a sizeable group ol alumni in the Chicago area, ilong with thousands of fans who have adopted the Fighting Irish as their team.When Wisconsin invades Evanston on Nov. 16 to play Northwestern the game will have an additional Chicago-area flavor. The Wildcats have six players on the varsity roster.
