PAGE lOTHE COURIER-CRESCENT • ORRVILLE, OHIOTHURSDAY, OCTOBER 9 , 1969Johnson-Handwerk PunchToo Much For Blue DevilsShowing no signs of a letdown, the Red Riders, headed by theone-two punch of Bill Handwerk and Jim Johnson, completely overwhelmed Brunswick, 46-0, Friday night. The two backfield gems accounted for half of Orr-ville’s six touchdowns, and picked up needed yardage whenever called upon. The first half was played without the use of the scoreboard, which had blown a fuse before the game started. Neither team was much affected by this inconvenience, although continuous referee consultation was eliminatediwith the repair of the clock in the second half.OHS kicked off to open this fray, and the ball was put into play on the Blue Devils’ 42. Since three power smashes netted one yard, enemy Greg Hill lofted a 32-yard punt which was downed on the Rider 25. On the first series of downs, the Riders appeared to be testing the Blue Devil defensive line with simple runs, then obligingly gave the ball back to Bruaswick via a Dave Handwerk punt.Fumble the Pigskin Three plays later, BHS tailback Jay Maslanka was hit from the blindside in the backfield and fumbled the pigskin, with Orr-ville recovering. After the fumble, OHS got its high-powered offense in gear and transported the ball 45 yards with swift efficiency. With Jim Johnson, Big Red’s leading scorer and rusher, sitting on the sidelines, Coach Tipton called on unsung backs Handwerk, Reiheld and Denman to carry the mail. Eight plays after the Red and White recovered the fumble, Thom Denman blasted his way the remaining seven yards for the first TD of the game. The attempted conversion failed, giving Orrville a slim 6-0 lead, which it successfully defended throughout the remainder of the initial quarter.Holding its adversary on downs for the third time in as many tries, OHS ran out the clock in the first frame and continued to control the ball early in the second period. Keeping the ball on the ground throughout the march, Reiheld plunged into the end zone from three yards out to cap the 50-yard drive. Handwerk garnered the PAT by rolling out and gliding into paydirt behind excellent blocks from his offensive4line.Still SputteringBrunswick’s offense was still sputtering after the Red Rider kickoff, as off-taekle slants by Maslanka, Draiss and Butler gained little forward progress. Their punt was returned fouryards by OHS’ lithe safety man, Paul Luster, putting the ball into play on Orrville’s 39. A long,time-consuming drive was thwarted when quarterback Handwerk was trapped behind the line of scrimmage, setting up a fourth and long yardage situation. Before the half had run its course, however, the eventual winners regained possession of the ball and moved to their thirdTD. Opening the offensive attack, Handwerk put the ball into the air with good results, hitting end Darrel McDonald for a 26-yard9gain and coming back to the lanky junior for the six-pointer from 13 yards away. With the clock stopped at 0:48, Handwerk calmly rolled to his left and spotted cousin Dave Handwerk in the end zone for the points after touchdown.Following the 30-minute intermission, Coach Tipton’s charges netted another TD in the opening minute of play. After McDonald returned the. short kickoff 20 yards to Orrville’s 47, Bill Handwerk broke several tackles and galloped 53 yards on the quarterback draw for his initial touchdown of the night. Reiheld ploughed through the heart of Brunswick’s defense for the PAT upping the count to 30-0.Most Serious March Several exchanges preceded Brunswick’s most serious march of the night late in the third period. Marking up four of its five first downs in this drive, Brunswick was finally halted on Orrville’s two-yard line. Two cracks at the line chalked up just one yard, forcing the Blue Devils to give up the football. The onslaught continued, as “Mo’s Men” used 11 plays to cover the 98 yards, with Handwerk’s 17-yard screen pass to Jim Johnson culminating the journey. Once again Reiheld bulled his way for the two extra points at 9:30 in the fourth quarter.Substitutes dotted OHS’ lineup from this point onward, and sloppy play highlighted action for the middle part of the stanza. A Dave Netzly fumble, caused when the soph quarterback was hit just as he was releasing the ball, on an option play, gave the rivals a last chance to dent the scoreboard.Scrambling to the 10, the Blue Devils endured one of their most frustrating evenings of the year when cornerback Randy Van Dyne, playing his opponent beautifully, stepped in front of the intended receiver to pick off Mas-lanka’s aerial in the end zone. Van Dyne returned it 18 yards to Orrville’s 12, whereupon Bill Handwerk and Jim Johnson combined for the final TD of the longaffair. Without benefit of rehearsal, Handwerk and Johnson performed one of the better Al-phonse-Gaston acts of the year. Rolling right, Handwerk picked his way through a maze of tack-lers before a Blue Devil belted him 29 yards from the line of scrimmage, causing the senior field general to fumble the ball. Johnson, following the play like a good halfback should, snatched the ball on the first bounce and dashed the final 59 yards unmolested, Ron Houmard’s PAT iced the game for the undefeated Red Riders.Dominate BattleGaining a magnificent 454 net yards (399 on the ground), Orrville completely dominated the battle. Jim Johnson, due to his last-minute, 59-yard outburst, nosed Handwerk for rushing honors, compiling 132 yards in six carries to Handwerk’s 129 yards in 13 attempts. Reiheld, Jeff Johnson and Denman also provided excellent backfield support, each notching more than 25 yards. The locals hit three of six passes for 55 yards, with Darrel McDonald (two catches) the primary receiver. The Red Riders passing attack, non-existent in several early season games, seems to have come into its own.Chalking up 16 first downs, 11 more than Brunswick, Orrville still had some trouble hanging onto the ball at times, coughing up the ball twice. The Riders were penalized 55 yards, which was primarily due to the rusty timing of second-stringers in the fourth quarter.Jay Maslanka, Brunswick’s all-around star, was hemmed in for 40 yards in 19 carries, approximately one-third of the loser’s total yardage (128). For a weak passing team, BHS’ four completions in 11 attempts did not make the Big Red defensive backfield look too impressive.PlaysRushing Passing Y ardsRushrhg Passing First Downs Fumbles-Fumbles Lost Penalties-Yards Pass Comp, and Att.
