LURolla• Will tonights’ • game against the University of Missouri-Rolla Miners begin a new season for the Lincoln Blue Tiger football team?Coaeh Don Hudson and his squad -hope so as they open Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association play in a 7:30p.m. game at Lincoln Stadium. The Blue Tigers, winless in their last 15 games and 0-4 in 1977 following the forfeit of a 20-20 tie, lead the-Miners 7-4 in the series that is Lincoln’s longest with any MIAA school.Hudson and his players must feel the MIAA slate will be a breather from what they’ve met so far. Two of LU’s losses came to NAIA top twenty teams Central State of Ohio and Mississippi Valley State; Their other . loss came to Langston, 3-1 and the tie occurred at Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 3-2 following LU’s forfeit after it was discovered' several of the LU players were academically ineligible.“You know,” said Hudson, we've lost four game but we’ve shown a lot of progress. Our offense is averaging over 260 yards per game and we’ve given up only a little more than that.Heck, we’ve already gained over 1,000 yards. It took us all U games last year to reach that level.” Rolla’s Miners, 2-2 on the season, feature a wide-open passing attack that paces the MIAA and also ranks nationally among NCAA Division Hschools.Quarterback Ken Vaughn, a senior who transferred from the Air Force Academy after his sophomore year, is the MlAA’s best passfer with 59 completions in 121 attempts for 919 yards and six touchdowns. He ranks third in the nation in passing and total offense.Vaughn’s favorite.reeeiver has been tight end Andy Cox, a 6.-3 junior who has caught 23 passes for 395 yards and three scores, fourth best in the nation. When the passing fails, coach Charlie . Finley’s Miners turn to junior tailback Terry Ryan who stands second in the MIAA in rushing and third in the national with 506 yards on 105 carries. The Miner defense, however, has been porous, allowing an average of 295.4 yards per game. Lincoln has also had defensive problems, giving up 320 yards per game despite having the MIAA’s best jass defense. •But the MIAA has not been known for defense.so far this year. The lowest defensive .average in the league-is Northeast’s 282-yard figure.Look for a high-scoring affair tonight..Lincoln’s offense has featured the big play this year. Freshman tailback JoJo Galloway has two of the biggesL a 67-yard run from scrimmage against Central State and a 57-yard run with a screen pass for a touchdown against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Galloway ranks fourth in the MIAA in rushing with m yards on 69 carries.Senior wide receiver Mike West continues to be a threat each time he touches the ball. He also returns punts and kickoffs, categories in which he led the MIAA as a sophomore in 197$. :.The last time Lincoln and UMR met in Jefferson City was in 1975 and West turned that game around with punt and kickoff returns of 80 yards as Lincoln rallied from a 16*7 halftime deficit to win 28-26.Last year Lincoln took the early lead but sputtered and lost 34-1$.Freshman Greg Parker, a high school teammate of Galloway’s, will get his second start of the season at quarterback. His passing has been somewhat erratic but he has thrown for 286 yards and three touchdowns and has added some spark to the Tiger attack with his. option running. He scored twice in Arkansas.Lincoln has scrapped the tight end in some situations to get more speed into the game. Consequently, two wide receivers, Mike West, and junior college transfer Ricky King, will start Saturday. King is Lincoln’s second-leading receiver with six catches for 98 yards.Lincoln Opponents Receiving _41 First downs 57 - No, Yds.
