Page 10THE WORLD. WEDNEI’ve been hearing so much about the Astroturf (artificial grass) being installed at the Triton college football field (it was billed to be played on at a Sept. 20 game, but wasn’t ready) so when I heard that Saturday. Oct. 4, the Trojans would be playing on the a,stroturf, I thought, “We’ll believe it when we see it.”Well, you can believe me, I saw it — a beautiful field of artificial green grass in the middle of what used to be the outdoor theatre on Fifth avenue just north of North avenue. I was doubtful as to how we would find it (afte-rall I was always used to a man with a flashlight showing the way at the outdoor theatre) Sweeping around off of North avenue, looking for some kind of entrance, we were relieved to see the college had put up a large ‘Football Parking Here' sign at the south entrance to the cam pus on Fifth avenue. After parking there it was an easy task'to cross the road (with the aid of that new crossing light we read about in last week’s coverage of a Triton board meeting by WORLD reporter. Karen Kelly). I can see where that light is a real necessity with all the pedestrian crossing that goes on the day of a game.I must admit to having misgivings about the safety of playing on artificial turf, which I will set aside temporar ily, since both teams appeared to have survived the expe rience; and beside that Dr. Zeitlin (President at Triton) assured me that they had checked into the safety factor and had statistics to prove it would be no more danger ous than regular grass. As to the appearance, you must get over there your self, absolutely beautiful. To quote one youthful fan seated high up in the stands, “This stadium seems secluded in the forest. It looks like a half wav built stadium (so far’there is only one side of stands) in the middle of anabandon.*d dirt field of car heaters and speakers’’ (^lics of the ofildoor theatre).True, there is still much to be done, but with the rus tling of leaves in the tall trees right at your back, as you perch in the high stands, and the exquisite spread of green at your feet, it is positively breath taking. What people are flocking to the country to enjoy — nature's show — can be viewed right here from the Triton Trojans standsThe scoreboard wasn’t up yet, but an excellent public address system that day made it quite easy to follow the game (Also having a program which sells for only 10 cents at the gate, is very helpful.)The Trojans will be playing an away game this weekend, but the following Saturday, Oct. IK, they will be playing Illinois Valley at 1 p.m. Do try to make it. and be a good sport by bringing some neighborhood kids along to enjoy the game (and the view) with you Admission is $1 50 for adults; 50 cents for children; and 75 cents forstudents with ID's.Perhaps the scoreboard will be up by then (again refer ring to last week’s WORLD, the college board — on a split vote — decided to install one). Let’s hope it is a bet ter score than last week (the hometown team, Triton lost). However, the losing column seemed to be the popu lar place to be last weekend Beside Triton, other local losers were East Leyden. Holy Cross, and Elmwood Park But hats off to West Leyden, who has at last caught on to a winning formula.Getting back to Astroturf (that is where I startl'd this story, isn’t it?) if you want to see it be at the south end of the Triton college campus Saturday, Oct. IK, shortly before 1 p m Bring a blanket and some money if you want to eat hot dogs and hot chocolate. I won’t guarantee(hat you'll have a good time, but I know I willTruesdell at Cyprian \The Women’s Club of St. Cyprian parish, in their usual generous spirit whenever they obtain the services of a good speaker, are issuing an invitation to all who enjoy the talks of the Rev. Truesdell to come join them next Monday evening, Oct. 13, in the parish annex hall somt time around K p.m.I say around 8 p.m. because the evening will begin, forthe members of the club, at 6:30 p.m. with a pot luck supper (sorry, the general public is not invited to this) and a business meeting. They reckon to be finished withpersonal club stuff about 8, so that's why your invitationto the speakin’ is for that time.Father Truesdell is a popular charismatic speaker and has appeared several times at Thursday evening meet ings at neighboring St. Francis Borgia parish. He also conducted a Day of Recollection at Cyprian’s Iasi spring. For this, his second visit to St. Cyprian, Father Trues dell has something less formal than a Day of Recollt (ion in mind, so the ladies thought the atmosphere of the church hall right after an informal supper would be just the right setting. They really won’t mind any of you (men or women) joining them for this evening with Father Truesdell There is no admission charge or offering of am kind. Just bring yourself and enjoy.Open houseFor their first meeting of the current year, the River Grove PTA has arranged for a classroom Open House to follow thdr 7:30 p.m. business meeting Tuesday, Oct. It Parents of students attending the schooled! be especially visiting the rooms and teachers of .their children; however checking with PTA president, Irene Martens, I find she agrees that it is also an excellent tiwv for residents of the school district who do not have anyvn*1 being taught at the school to also take advantage of fh(s Open House. An opportunity like this is sometimes ntbre in formative to the non parent taxpayer, than to the prints who have many occasions to be in and out of the building during the year. Please feel free to accept this hospitality of the PTA to visit your grammar school — and join them for refresh ments in the cafeteria afterwards You may find you’ll want to come back a second time.Oh, yes; isn't this also the night they will be selling those famous newly designed tee-shirts?W alker visitsOne nice feature of having the Elmwood Park High school in River Grove is that when they have a home coming parade, you people living along the southeast stretch of our village on Fullerton avenue get to enjoy it, too. And if the governor of Illinois happens to be in the parade — he is just liable to end up on your front porch That is exactly what happened to Marie and Ed Burda, and their daughter, Jam* a week ago last Saturday, as they watched the parade heading west on Fullerton through River Grove, toward the football field on Thatchj|p|fSurprised to see Governor Dan Walker (walking of course) in the parade. Marie called out, “Hi, Mr WalxerWith that, the governor left the parade momentarily, came up their front steps, shook hands, looked at the view from the Burda porch and said, “What a beautiful town you live in.”Marie said it was very thrilling. One hardly gets up on a Saturday morning and says, I think I’ll talk to Gov. Walker on my Mich today. Ilf!I forgot to ask if they were going to vote for him
