WCA girls end Fike's reign, Bruins boys reclaim throne as all 6 Wilson Co. schools compete in championshipsBy Jimmy LewisStaff WriterIt took eight years, but former Fike High cross-country coach Tom Griffith’s vision for the Wilson County Cross-Country Championship finally came to fruition on a sun-splashed Monday afternoon at Gillette Athletic Complex.For the first time in the event’shistory, all six of the county’s high schools — private and public — were represented in some fashion. In the boys’ Christian girls, who ended Fike’s race, Beddingfield junior Jacobseven-year reign as county champions. After briefly ceding the perch to Hunt in 2013, the Beddingfield boys team came back to win their third title in four years.Varnell emerged the winner, beating out Hunt sophomore Evan Lee in a time of 17 minutes, 47 seconds. For Varnell, it’s his first county championship after finishing runner-up as a sophomore.The Lady Chargers prevailed in a three-team duel for the girls’ title, getting all five of their runners in the top 11 en route to a team score of 34. Hunt and Fike each compiled 47 points, but the Lady Warriors earned the runner-up trophy by virtue of a better sixth-place finish. Beddingfield, Community Christian and Greenfield did not field theminimum five runners for a teamscore.Four teams vied for the boys title, with the Bruins placing all five of their runners inside the top 10 to finish with a team score of 24.
