(Photo by Ron Case).By KEVIN FORDGreg Damiani won’t see his right ankle until tommorrow He will then painfully tear off the tape and stiff cardboard which are used to form a type of movable cast which enables him to play each week.Despite this injury, which has kept Greg out of severalpractices each week, the gusty senior halfback picked up 246 yards rushing and scored two touchdowns in leading Marian past Argo, 22-8, yesterday at Sariff Feild. It was obvious from the beginning of the Illini-8 game that the All-State halfback was hurting. He was never able to run at top speed and often took several seconds to get up after being tackled. Damiani relied on cut-back running and his outstanding strength to continually pick up yardage.HIS FIRST score was a brilliant 56 yard jaunt with 1 1:31 left in the first quarter. Taking a handoff from quarterback Nick Calvi, Damiani went downfield and cut left against the flow of play. Obviously slowed up his ankle, he still managed to shake off tacklers enroute to the score.Argo tied it up on the next possession, as quarterback Mike Pyrz picked the Marian secondary apart with accurate passing. The big play in the 79 yard drive was a 40 yard heave from Pyrz to end Tom ZagorskiSTAR-TRIBUNE: Sunday, October 5,1975S27 H15 TP16which moved the ball to the Marian 39.The score came with 9:15 remaining in the half, as Pyrz hit tight end John Cochrane with a five yard pass. A fake kick and a pass from holder Pyrz to Zagorski netted the extra points, tying the game at 8-8.With less than a minute remaining in the half, Calvi again threw and found end Terry Kenney for the score, with only 0:19 left in the half. The extra point attempt failed, holding the Spartan lead at 14-8.AFTER picking up 175 ot hisyards on 14 carries in the first half, Damiani had already accomplished more than would have seemed possible for someone in his condition. Butthe best runner in the Spartan history wasn’t finished. An interception by Matt Scott gave Marian possession at their 35. Incredibly enough, Damiani moved the ball the entire 65 yards. He accomplished this on eight consecutive carries, the final one being a seven yard spurt around the left side, to move Marian ahead,20-8.Argo’s defeat was insuredwith 8:50 remaining in the contest. On second and 10 from their own 5 (where the Spartans had turned the ball over on downs) Pyrz was nailed for a safety by a host of the Spartans, including Andy DeRosa, Gary Blue and Jim Greer. The victory moved Marian to 4-1 for the year and in the 1-8. For Argo, the loss did just the opposite, as it dropped to 1-4.THE SPARTAN secondary, although giving up its most passing yardage of the year (168), nonetheless came up with three interceptions. Scott,Brian D'Apice, and JoeZarlengo all latched onto prrantpasses, blunting several Argo drives. But the shining star had to be Damiani. His 246 yards (on 27 carries) moved his season total to o over 950. And it was Damiani who continually gotthe slightly sluggish Marianoffense moving. Perhaps to avoid making Greg too much of a Superman, there will be no mention of the other injury. After all, how much difference can a couple of bruised ribs (incurred in practice Thursday) make anyway?Rolling around end with plenty of protection, Marian quarterback Nick Calvi hoofs it for a gain yesterday against Argo.
