The novel was described■by the judges as “an uncommon book illustrating the problems of a Metis boy in rising above his drab inheritance/’The prize of a publishing contract with Macmillan and $500 in advance royalties went to Randal Harker, 26, of i Calgary for his book Adrift. ICalgary author Marie ■ Jakober’s science-fiction offering When Leopards Are Gone won third place in the competition.A distinguished honorable mention went to Neil Crichton of Edmonton while honorable mentions went to Monica Hughes and Pat Stevenson of Edmonton and Marjorie Holland and Nathan Kositsky of Calgary.Judging the approximately 40 entries were W. G. Hardy, retired professor of classics at. the University of Alberta, Walter H. Johns, a former president of the University of Alberta, and H. Lovat Dickson of Toronto, a former publisher with Macmillan of England.
