Continued from page 1BWest Burlington-Notre Dame has rallied to win two of its last three games, including last week’s come-from-behind 19-8 triumph over Van Buren.“We are hoping to jump on them early,” Ungerer said. “Hopefully, their magic will end. It sounds like they have been lucky to win a few games.”After falling to Columbus (34-12) and Mediapolis (8-6) in its first two games, Central Lee has dumped Danville (39-12), Van Buren (20-14) and Winfield-Mount Union (14-6).Quarterback Phil Tweedy leads the Hawks with 414 passing yards, but has been intercepted nine times while completing 25 of 54 attempts. His primary target is senior tight end Jeff Smith, who is 6-foot-4 and 215 pounds. Smith has 11 catches for 177 yards. Split end Jason Hopp has five grabs for136 yards.Central Lee tailback Tom Marquez has rushed for 397 yards and Bob Bergman has added 199 yards on the ground.“The last couple of weeks we have been more balanced,” Ungerer said. “Teams are starting to make us pass more.”Size and experience are the keys for the Hawks. Central Lee only has two non-senior starters.“These guys are a lot bigger than anyone we’ve faced,” West Burlington-Notre Dame coach Bill Nelson said. “They have some guys that are 220, 230 on offense and some 240 or 250 on defense. Both teams are averaging just 13 points per game.“Our defense and special-teams play have been the key for us,” Jensen said. “Plus, we’ve only had four turnovers in five games. We’re not scoring a lot of points, but we are controlling the ball.”“We’re struggling on offense,” Walljasper said. “We’ve had a lot of big plays, and I hope we have a few left.”Both coaches know how important this game is to their team’s chances the rest of the season.“We’ve got three games left, so it’s very important for us to stay in the conference race,” Jensen said. “If we don’t win, we’ve got two tough games against Fairfield and Ottumwa. In a way, we control our owndestiny.”“How important this game is is how important you take football,” Walljasper said. “I think it’s important and our kidsbigger and all 6-1 or 6-foot.”Nelson is looking for added intensity from his team.“We lt;?re trying to be a little more intense in practice and build up through the week,” Nelson said. “We are stressing mistake-free football.”Senior halfback Joel Rexroth continues to lead the potent Falcon ground game with 812 yards and 10 touchdowns. Senior fullback Ian MacLearn ran for 105 yards last week and now has 298 for the season.“They run the ball almost every play,” Ungerer said. “They have a good pair of backs. I think it will be a grind-it-out type of game. If we can keep them away from the big play, we will be OK. I think both offenses will be able tomove the ball.”For a team that has run the ball over 91 percent of the time, the Falcons have been effective throwing. Junior quarterback Brian Nelson has completed 6 of 8 pass attempts the last two weeks for 94 yards.“We haven’t thrown very much,” Coach Nelson said. “Brian has been very accurate. We would like to establish we can throw the ball.“The strength of their team is their defense. Nobody is getting more than two touchdowns against them since they played Columbus. They will try to take away our run. I think a lot of people try to do that. That is notunusual.”Nelson said his team will be ready. It would put us in the driver’s seat in the conference, and it could mean something for us in terms of the playoffs. So it’s a very big game for us if we win.”But Walljasper has an added incentive.
