On Friday, Santa Fe struck again, outscoring third-ranked Clovis 24-21 before the largest home crowd of the season at Ivan Head Stadium.The victory was only the second of the year for unranked Santa Fe, 2-3, but it could not have come at a more opportune time. The District 1AAAA season is just a couple of weeks away and the Demons were in desperate need of a shot of confidence.Santa Fe played well enough to win — at least offensively ~ but the Wildcats did have a paw in the outcome.The Demon defenders never did find a way in stopping the Wildcat groundhogs. But four turnovers, including two deadly fumbles in the final 7 minutes did.Clovis’ third fumble of the game occurred on second-and-goal from Santa Fe’s 6-yard line with 7:27 tp play. Quarterback John Ainsworth optioned left, then blindly pitched to ... no one. Greg Stone pounced on the ball to keep the Demons’ 24-21 lead safe.Less than 2 minutes later,Clovis had possession at the Demons’ 44. The Wildcats drove it to the 14 when Frank Morloek coughed up the ball for the second time. Martin Mena emerged from a pile of helmets and shoulder pads with the ball as Santa Fe’s sideline explodedwith joy with only 3:52 remain-ing-The Demons, thanks to offsides by Clovis on third-and-2 from their own 21, and quarterback Eddie Fernandez’s 11-yard scramble on third-and-6, ran out the clock.Fernandez had his finest hour. The 5-7, 145-pound senior completed 13-of-21 passes — most while scrambling for his life — for 159 of Santa Fe’s 180 passing yards. He also rushed 12 times for 35 yards.Four times in the first half Fernandez kept thrives alive with pinpoint passes as Santa took a 17-14 half time lead.After Morloek shaked, rattled and rolled his way 8 yards for Clovis1 first touchdown, on the fifth play of its opening drive, the Demons scored 10 points in six plays.Hugo Ojeda got Santa Fe on the board with a 23-yard field goal.
