Thunderbirds slip by Linton in rainBY STEVE FIELDS Citizen Sports EditorTt was like a greased pig contest Friday night at North Central with the pigskin slipping like the lead from one hand to another and finally being caught by the Thunderbirds.After three overtimes periods North Central held on to the ball long enough to score a 20-18 Victory over the visiting Miners.The loss left Linton at 0-5 and upped North Central to 2-4. Linton will host Cloverdale this Friday while North Central travels to Sullivan for theA Palestine, 111. lineman picked off a Dugger-Union pass Friday night and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown and the only points of the game as Union was edged 6-0.Union, now 0-5, will play its first home game of the 1977 season in the traditionalYOU CAN SET YOUR THERMOSTATIN THECOMFORTZONELinton scored first just before the rain started. David Yount caught a 30 yard pass from quarterback Rodney Robertson for a 6-0 lead. The point after attempt failed.But the Thunderbirds came right back to tie the game up with 2:10 left in the second quarter. Kent Halberstadt and Keith Chambers ran the ball up the middle of the Linton line to the Miner three yard line. Quarterback Jay Boyll took over from there, running the final three yards for the touchdown.The PAT attempt by NorthSaturday afternoon homecoming game with North Daviess. Game time is at 2 p.m.It was a defensive battle Friday night, after a 30 minute delay in starting the game because of the rain and officials being late. Later the game was stopped for another half hour because of lightning.Neither team scored in the first half as both were bending but not breaking. In the third period the only points were scored when a Lonnie Boyd pass was intercepted during a Union touchdown march.“We’re getting good yardage,” said Union coach Paul Steele, “but we can’t seem to put it together.”Union totaled 119 yards rushing, or wading, as Steele described the field as being a lake in the second half. Amazingly the Bulldogs did pass for 69 yards in the contest as Lonnie Boyd connected on six of 10 passes.Union had a serious scoring drive going in the second period before the half ended. With their backs to the wall Union turned to David Jobe who took the ball 60 yards. Lonnie BoydCentral failed, leaving the score tied at 6-6.The second half opened with neither team able to hold on to the football and after four quarters of football the score remained tied at 6-6.Neither team scored in the first overtime. But Linton hit paydirt in the second overtime first. Tailback Brad Wagner ran three yards for the go ahead Linton touchdown. Linton went for two on the point aftpr, but the pass from Brian Mifflin to Ken Gabbard was short.North Central came back with a touchdown of its own. After being foiled three times by a stiff and victory-hungry Miner defense, the Thunderbirds pulled successfully the seldom seen fleaflick play for a touchdown.Linton drove North Central back to the 15 yard line then on fourth down Boyll tossed a pass to Halberstadt who lateraled the ball to Kevin Coombs who scored the tying TD.The Thunderbirds tried to kick the extra point but Tom Steele broke through the North Central line to block the attempt.With the score tied at 12-12 the game went into the thirdovertime. North Central wonthe coin flip and took offensefirst.The Thunderbirds bulled the ball to the two yard line where Halberstadt scored the go ahead touchdown. Then on the extra point the Miners were whistled two times for encroachment penalties, moving the ball to the six inch line where Halberstadt plunged across the line for the winning points.Linton scored its final touchdown as Robertson hit end Ken Qabbard with a five yard pass, making the score 20-18. Linton h^d to go for two points and Robertson again hit Gabbard with a pass but the Miner end was stopped outside the end-zone.county championship gameUnion edged 6ONE ON ONE is Herb Abbott (31) with North Central Ben Price (28) in a sweep which allowed Abbott four yards for the Linton cause against North Central.Warriors win fourthThe North Knox Warriors earned their second shutout of the season and fourth victory by defeating Mitchell 26 0 in a game halted by the rain.With 5:36 remaining the second major down pour came and officials cancelled the contest.North Knox got its only needed points with 6 19 showing on the clock in the first quarter Mike Page broke through the Mitchell line for a 19 yard touchdown run, his first of the year Tony Kitchen kicked the point after.North Knox s shutout was threatened on Mitchell’s nest possession, but the Warrior defense stopped the Bluejackets on the Warrior two yard lineNorth Knox scored one more touchdown in the first half as the Warriors marched to the one yard line before Johnattempt fell short and NorthKnox led 20-0.John Kixmiller set up thefinal Warrior touchdown with an interception. Clifford then mixed his passing and running game to move the Warriors to the nine yard line where Larry Skipper, running the patented North Knox counter, cross the goal line.North Knox went for two on the point after but the attemptfailed.Skipper was the leadingground gainer with 52 yards in 10 carries for the Warriors. Tom field was Clifford’s top receiver of the evening with three catches for 42 yards.BPSV.*-£mmNorth Knox gained 190 yards rushing and another 122 yards passing as Clifford connected on seven of nine aerial attempts, for a total Warrior offense of 312. North Knox had 16 first downs and was penalized three times for 25 yards.Mitchell was limited to 68 yards rushing and 59 yards passing for a total offense of 127 yards. The Bluejackets had seven first downs and were penalized four times for 30 yards in their homecoming game.North Knox’s next game will be against playoff contender Pike Central at North Knox.W
