Baker Powers Gate City To 39-6 Win Over VikingsBy JACK HELMS(SATE CITY, Va. - Gate City look another long stride toward I lie Lonesome Pine District football championship here Friday night as the Blue Devils defeated a rugged Powell Valley team, 35-6,The overflow homecoming crowd saw fullback Jeff Maker continue his domination of tire district_ scoring and rushing categories. Tlw 150-pound sophomore scored four touchdowns and picked up 214 yards rushing in 23 carries.Friday night's performance gives Baker a total of 13 touchdowns in live games and a total of 763 yards rushing in 73 attempts for a unbelievable 10.5-yard average per carry.Powell Valley did, however, manage to do wlial no other leans so far this year has been able to, as the Vikings crossed (lie Devils’ goal fine. Gate City had the bait for 16 plays in the third period while Powell Valley had it for seven.The Devils broke loose again in the opening minute of the final quarter when Baker, guard Gilbert Smith and linebacker Buddy Babb broke through to block a punt on the Powell Val-ley 15. Baker picked up the balland was hauled down at the Viking three-yard Hue. On the next play he went over.
