Where three months ago there were over an hundred negroes, there is now not a baker’s dozen; only a few are employed at the hotel in West Baden. The French Lick Springs Company still employs colored help, and a large number of these live in West Baden. All kinds oi business has suffered by driving out the negro, but the saloons and restaurants have felt it most. The “nigger” is a good spender, and very few of them failed to spend all he made. They paid fabulous prices for room rent— and the real estate man also has a kick coming. The white girls who superseded the black boys in the dining room are giving general satisfaction, and it seems to be the “nigger’s finish” atWest Baden.
