Just briefly...Have you hugged a ref today?Referees across Canada will be recognized for their work as the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CA-HA) and the Manitoba Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA), and all minor hockey associations celebrate National Referees Week from Dec. 4 to 12.The week is set aside to appreciate the work done by more than 1,750 amateur officials across the province.Though their calls may sometimes be questionable, they have the safety of the players and the spirit of fair play in mind when they make their decisions. It is often a thankless job, but it is a job someone must do.During this week, take time to think before you yell at a young referee. They are not professionals, and we should not expect them to perform as such. Give a ref a break, at least for this week.New leagueThe Canadian Junior A Hockey League was established during meetings in Winnipeg and could conceivably encompass 118 teams from 11 junior A hockey leagues. The new CJAHL stretches from the Atlantic provinces to British Columbia and will operate within the framework of the CAHA. The aim of the non-profit league is to promote junior A hockey on a national level.British Columbia Junior Hockey League (BCJHL) chairman Fred Page was elected chairman of the board while BCJHL president Ron Boileau was elected president of the CJAHL.Central Junior Hockey League president Pat Parker was voted Eastern vice-president while Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League president Wayne Kartusch was elected Western vice president and Alberta Junior Hockey League president Marty Knack was voted secretary. The first annual general meeting of the CJAHL is scheduled for May 7 and 8 at Calgary in conjunction with the Centennial Cup National Championship April 29 to May 7 at Olds, Alta.
