(Photo by Paul Rowan)9-yard gain dur-By Paul Rowan Sports EditorALTOONA — Claysburg-Kim-mel dominated the first and fourth quarters of Saturday’s District 6-A playoff game against Laurel Valley. The midde two, however, were another story. The Rams scored four touchdowns in a span of 12 offensive plays in the second quarter, then reached the end zone twice more in the third to demolish the Bulldogs, 49-15.“They have a real good team,” said Claysburg Coach JeffLingen-felter. “They have no weaknesses. We knew we were going to have to play our very best game, and we didn’t do it.”The Bulldogs were far from flawless, but Lingenfelter found comparatively little to criticize about his team’s effort afterward.“I don’t know that there is another single-A team in District 6 that could do any better than we did ” he said.“It was our day today,” said Laurel Valley Coach Jerry Page. “We were ready to play. We were bigger. Our size helped. And our execution was very good,”C-K’s demise started even before the opening kickoff, when Dave Cowher fell on his knee during warm-ups. The C-K senior fullback-linebacker limped through the game, but was unable to make his usual impact on both sides of the ball.“That’s too bad, because he's an outstanding football player. He just wasn’t 100 percent,” said Lingenfelter. For a while, it appeared that the injury would not matter. C-K ran off three straight first downs on the opening series, moving from the Claysburg 29 to the Laurel Valley 24 before turning the ball over on downs. The Rams showed their big-play potential on the first series, when Jason Burkhart broke a third-down sweep for a 71-yard touchdown.Unfazed, Claysburg went 59 yards in 11 plays to tie the game. The big gainer was a 32-yard pass play from Tim Oakes to Mike Knisley that took the ball to the LV 16. John Taylor scored on a sweep around left end from 4 yards out, and Kirk Eicher’s kick gave C-K a 7-6 lead.“They were impressive,” said Page. “I didn’t know if we would be able to stop them.”Page had a bad moment on the next series, when quarterback Erik Foust fumbled the football, and C-K’s Shawn Claar recovered. But the Bulldogs were unable to move and punted back to LV.The Rams went back in front with a 6-play, 75-yard drive. Burkhart gained most of it on a 39-yard run on a draw and a 10-yard carry to set up his TD from 6 yards away,C*K was again unable to move, and Laurel Valley took over at the 50 and went the distance in six plays. Half of it came on the first snap, a 25-yard pass from Foust to Tim O’Shell. Foust scored the TD on a 1-yard sneak. On Claysburg’s first play following the kickoff, Burkhart intercepted at the C-K 42 and returnedto the 14. Two plays later he scored from eight yards out on a sweep around the left side.It was the final carry of the day for Burkhart, who left the game with 10 carries for 146 yards.“What a job the young fellow did,” said Page. But Tim (O'Shell) and Doug (Robertson) have blocked well for him all year. They are two of the best blocking backs I’ve been around ”“He averaged about 10 yards a carry all year. We didn't hurt his average any,” said Lingenfelter.Claysburg missed on three straight passes and had to punt. On the first play, Foust found O’Shell alone beyond the C-K defense for a 52-yard touchdown pass. They are very opportunistic in their throwing,” observed Lingenfelter.Lingenfelter said much of his team’s difficulties came from an inability to move through the air.“We knew we were going to-have to throw the ball,” he said.y “Once we fell behind, we stilL couldn’t get our passing game' going, and things started to snow-’ ball.We couldn’t throw it enough to put any fear into them as far as our passing game,” he continued. “They are too big and too physical for us to run the ball at them for four quarters.”With Burkhart watching from the sidelines, the Rams mounted two long scoring drives in the third quarter with O’Shell at the tailback spot. He accounted for both touchdowns on runs of 14 and 15 yards.GAME NOTES: Oakes finishedas C-K’s leading rusher with 65 yards in seven carries.
