San Antonio College. If the Braves didn't show up, the other teams would have to hire a tour guide to lead them through the course. “Just follow the guys in the blue,” is the traditional instructions given by coaches whose teams compete against the Bravesin crosscountry. The Braves, coached this year by Joe Sciame, will be shooting for their fifth consecutive CIF cross country title. They won the 2-A championship in 1969, the 3-A crown in ’70, and the 4-A title in ’71 and again last year. This year Lompoc has been put back in the 3-A competition, and it’s likely that a pair of Braves Jim Schankel and Roger Fabing the pack. The team title, however, is still verybeschoolssurvived last week’s prelims, also at Mt. Sac.Lompoc finished fourth among the 3-A teams last week. But one Lompoc runner was injured and a couple others were battling the flu. This weekeveryone is healthy.Especially Schankel and Fabing, the team's twoveterans, who outran the field of some 600 runners at the prelims. Schankel clocked 10:01 and Fabing 10:02 over the rugged, multi-hilled, two-mile, 110-yard course. The only high schooler ever to break 10 minutes at Sac is Terry Williams, who brought the individual title back to Lompoc last year with a sizzling 9:48.0. Although Williams’ course record is safe, Schankel and Fabing both have a good shot atbreaking the 10 minute barrier.Schankel finished fourth in the 4-A race last year,Fabing ninth. The other five Braves will be running in the Championships for the first time. They are: Terry Jackson, John Fick, Jeff Holoubek, DaveSmith, and Jerry Hollister.Perhaps the toughest competition for the teamtitle will come from Northern League nemisis SanLuis Obispo, whom the Braves defeated in a leaguedual meet, but not by much. The race is set to start at 11 a.m., sandwichedbetween the 2-A and 4-A races. Mt. Sac is in Walnut, just a few minutes off the San Bernardinofreeway.
