THE SIDEUNOTHINGBUT THE BESTfcy Fred NueschPARIS JUNIOR COLLEGE mil bring here, and meet on the road, some of the finest juco basketball squads in the nation this season. And this begins tonight as the Dragons travel to Dallas for a clash against Dallas Baptist College.Dallas Baptist isn’t ranked in the top 20, but this is expected to change next week. The Indians went to the Garden City, Kan., tournament last week, and in that tourney knocked off two of the top teams in the nation. In the first round, the Daliasites upset Dodge City, Kan., which was last season’s No. 1 team in the nation, and ranks No. 3 in this week’s poll. 'And in the second round, the Indians whipped Howard County of Texas, the No. 12 ranked team in this week’s poll.Murray AM of Tishomingo, Okla., a future opponent of the Dragons, is ranked No. 4 in the poll, and Kilgore, a Texas Eastern Conference opponent, is No. 5 this week..Also, Murray is picked to capture the Region 2 championship, and Kilgore is picked to grab the Region 14 title again this year. Thus, never let it be said the Dragons pick on patsies in their campaign.THE DISTRICT 7-AAAA North Zone basketball race may turn into a much tighter race than many had thought at thestart of the season. When 7-AAAA was divided, many said the roughest slate would be in the South Zone, which features defending champion Highland Park, last year’s second place team Garland and this season’s favorite, Richardson. But Denton has compiled an impressive record thus far in the North, and has rolled over several opponents. The Broncos defeated Grand Prairie much more impressivelythan did Highland Park.Sherman opened its campaign last weekend with a 5^49 victory over Carrollton, a South Zone entry, and a 72-45 shellacking of Dallas Jesuit.Paris also looked much better in its openers last weekend than it had last year.Denison has yet to open its campaign. So the North Zone might have quite a fight on its hands for the area title, and then could give the South Zone winner a battle for the overall crown.DEWITT, ARK., the school to which Coach Sam Cook moved after leaving Idabel last spring, finished its season with a 12-9 record, and ranked No. 1 among the Class AAschools in that state.Cook and his Dragon squad will be awarded a trip to the Cotton Bowl New Year’s Day for their accomplishments. In Arkansas, there are no rules against rewarding teams with trips and gifts. Usually several dozen football teams are given tickets and trips to the bowl games in Dallas and New' Orleans.EL DORADO, THE ARKANSAS entry in the Four States Tournament here in late December, has opened its season with two one-sided victories. The Wildcats downed Bastrop, La., this week, 60-50.Many are picking El Dorado as the team to beat in the Class, AAA state race in Arkansas. ..Commerce, another of the teams in the tournament, has also overwhelmed two early teams on its schedule, and the Tigers, El Dorado and two or three other teams entered could come into the tourney with unblemished marks.Cooper is 3-0 for the season and holds a berth in the meet.An early tournament preview' will be seen Friday night when Paris and Durant, OMa., clash. These same teams dash headon in the first round of the Four States affair.APPARENTLY THE NATIONAL cage figures rate Don Kruse, 6*8 star for Kilgore Junior College the past two years, quite highly.Kruse has moved to the University of Houston this season. and the Cougars are being rated in the top 20 in thenation in the early polls.Houston opens tomorrow night at San Francisco, and this will be a major test to see just where the Cougars stand on a national basis.DURANT MOVES BACK into District 5-A next season with Hugo, Broken Bow, Idabel and Atoka. The Lions went into Class AA two years back. But an enrollment drop has placed the club back in the Class A fold, and the district now is back to normal. This should help the Valley schools at the gate. Durant has long been a key rival for Hugo, Idabel and Broken Bow.THERE’LL BE A LOT OF FAMILIAR faces on the AustinCollege cage team this season.Tommy Skipworth, a member of the Paris Collegian baseball team this past summer, is the leading scorer of last season who returns. Also of local interest are Clyde Cotton, who transferred from Decatur Baptist: Tony Toro of Greenville; Robert Young, who played with Lon Morris last season: Alton Evans of Sherman; David Lander of Mesquite; Ronald Campbell of Sherman; James Terral of Hooks; David Warren of Sherman.1ofitwheinhiatltcndvFwaaCtlt!bIt
