Scoring threats pace Class D hoop squadKALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — It wasn’t so many years ago that a women’s basketball team scored 48 points in a game.How the look on the scoreboard has changed!This season three players in Class D had games in which they pumped in 48 or more points, with Kelly McCosh of Mio popping in a school-record 53 against Hale.Lisa Roelle of Iron Mountain North Dickinson scored 50 and 44 in single games and Central Lake’s Stephanie Mortenscn had a 48-point performance.All three have been selected to the 1989 Associated Press Class D All-State squad.Amy Boynton of Leland, Dawn Murphy of Ottawa Lake Whiteford and Dollar Bay’s Shelly Collette were named to the team for the second straight year. They also were unanimous choices.Also chosen were Erica Hall of Manton, Angela Bond of perennial Class D power Walkerville, Jill Wet-thuhn of Camey-Nadeau, Baraga’s Julie Filpius, Dana Sevcech ofWaterford Our Lady of the Lakes, Peck’s Shelly Ross and top-ranked Potterville’s Gina Harrington.Cheryl Mox, who’s coached 16 years at Potterville and produced a 263-110 record and a state champ in 1985, was selected Coach of the Year. Mox’s teams have compiled a 120-14 mark over the last five seasons.Harrington, a starter for three years for Potterville (currently 24-0), averaged 20.2 points, came up with 84 steals and was credited with 78 assists her senior season.Boynton averaged 21.4 points and built her career total to almost 1,200 at Leland, another perennial power in the hardwood sport. Boynton connected on 41 percent of her 3-point attempts and is also the team’s best defensive player.Murphy, voted Monroe County Player of the Year even though playing for a small school, averaged 22 points, six rebounds, 4.4 steals and three assists for No. 3-rankcd(Please See CLASS D, Page 9)
