EMPORIA — After the game turned physical in the 2nd half, College of Emporia wrestled the lead from KansasWesleyan and posted a 98-79 victory in a *non-league basketball game here Wednesday night A;'Wesleyan,,which; split even with 2 other • Heart of America basketball teams in the, Kansas Wesleyari Classic .in Salina last weekend, headed the Emporia ball club of ; coach Gene Stauffer 41-40 at intermission.The Coyotes had jumped out front early, led by 6 to 8 points at times, and played ■ well. ; ■ .vPhysical changeBut the complexion of the game changed in the 2nd. half. It became physical and the Emporians were a bigger ball club. When it was over officials had tooted 58 fouls, 33 of them on Wesleyan.During the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half the Presbies outshbt Wesleyan 33-16 to take a 73-57 advantage and the Coyotes could never catch up... “The kids didn’t- quit and worked hard,” Coach Randy St. Clair said. “College of Emporia knew it was in a ball game. But the looseness of the 2nd half hurt us.•‘It became a physical game and Emporia was bigger.”The Coyotes iost Dave Hunt, their 6-4 pi-votman andone of their tallest players, on fouls in the early going and also lost Gary Jessamy, who dumped in 12 points before departing. . “• - -: 'yjL t.•Charlie Green and Clyde Murrell each had 14 points and Kirk Foster scored 12.Emporia, with a veteran lineup, was paced by Jim Young with 28 points and followed by Lou Jordan with 23. Rusty Smiley scored 17.Junior varsityIn the junior varsity game, College of Emporia won a 69-67 decision with Bruce Price, who had 22 points, providing the winning points in the final minute.
