AWC Wrestlers In Co. TourneyYou can hardly blame Arizona Western College if the wrestling Matadors feel somewhat lonely this weekend.After all/the Matadors are only one of four Arizona junior college rani teams entered in the Southwestern Wrestling Championships which starts tomorrow at. 7 p.m. in Chula Vista, Calif., with the finals set for all day Saturday.AWC, Mesa Community, Glendale Community and Phoenix College are the only state teams entered in the 32-team affair. The rest of the field all hail from California.“This will truly be a competitive tournament,’* said AWC Couch Glenn Mayle. We may be outnumbered by the California schools, but it wouldn’t surprise mu if an Arizona team does quite well.”The Matadors will be taking a nine-man squad to the tournament and Mayle feels several of his wrestlers might come away with individual honors, Keed Green well (118), Jim May (126), Mike Grue (150) and Steve Campos (158) all have an excellent chance at an individual title, the second-year coach said. “I expect these wrestlers lo finish high. These young men are tough and if they come through with a super effort, they will do the job.A-so making the trip are 134-pound Mark Bevtseh, either Jeff Murcer or Ben Rowe in the 142-pound class, 167-pouifd Greg Garcia, 177-pound Martin Bailey and 100-pound Ira Murphy.Missing tomorrow’s trip will lie unlimited wrestler Mike Howe. Howe will be attending a family re-union, which has been in the planning stages for more than a year.“We knew Mike wouldn't be able to make this trip,” Mayle said. If Mike could have made the trip, I am pretty sure he would have been able to place.”Also missing tomorrow’s journey are 142-pound John Harris and 167-pound Hob Ks-Lupiiuui. “Harris has eligibility problems. He attended a school in Texas, which didn’t have a wrestling team, last year. We are trying to find out whether he can wrest In this venr ur whether lie svill haveVto sit out a year.”Estupimm is battling a back injury.“This will probably be one of the toughest tournaments we will enter this year” Mayle added. “Il should be similar to our zone tournament and the first few rounds of our national tournament.“If I had to pick favorites in this meet 1 would have to consider Mesa, Phoenix, Golden West of Long Beach, San Ber-nadino and Cerritos of Norwalk.
