Matador Wrestlers Try Phoenix CollegeArizona Western College opens its dual meet wrestling schedule tomorrow night at home, taking on powerful Phoenix College.The meet will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Matador gym.Head coach for the Matadors this season is Glenn Mayle, an assistant coach a year ago.A graduate of Northern Arizona University, Mayle coached at Moreno Valley High School in Sunnymead, Cn., for four years before joining the ‘ staff of the Matadors,In 1964, he placed third in the wrestling Olympic trials. He doubles at AWC as Director of Cooperative Education.“The state championship is going to be up for grabs thisyear, says Mayle. “The strongest challenges should come from Phoenix and Glendale, but I feel we have a chance of winning the title if we stay healthy.“We have an excellent schedule this year with 15 matches, not counting six tournaments plus the Regional and National tournaments.“Our wrestlers will have the opportunity to wrestle 50 or more matches,Experience should be one of the Matadors’ strong points this season as 10 lettermen return from a year ago.Heading the list of veterans are defending state champions John Knecht (116) and Keith Rhodes (150). Heavyweight John Stricklin, who is currently out with a neck injury suffered in football, was second inI he state last year, while 190-pound Bill Moody was third.Other lettermen include Bill Barefoot (126), Ron Hines (14*2), Frank Teruel (134), Ralph Richard™* (158), George Mitchell (167) and Run Sansoni (177).Newcomers this season include heavyweight Dan Pricket, Steve Campos (1*58), Manuel Galvan (126), Eddie Knecht (118), Kevin McVeigh 1126), Ben Rowe (150) and Mitch Ruiz(142).I am expecting outstanding .performances from the Knecht brothers, says Mayle. Both qualified for the Olympic Trials this past summer.Following the Phoenix contest, the next home match forthe Matadors will be Dec. 16th against Mesa Community.
