The idea was to check on the defending champions of the North Olympic League, meet the players and the nevfr coaches. It’s been a year since I made that trek. The only way to go these days is to Sappho, then cut over the Burnt Mountain Road. That new road Is something else and will be like a freeway when finally paved. At any rate, the road from Clallam to Neah Bay Is still the same. Both hands on the wheel all the way!MIKE MILLER „ , , New at NeahNeah Bay in the late fall is not the wildest place going, but they go wild about basketball and went wild last year when the Devils posted a 7-1 league record and a 13*3 season mark. They went to Spokane and ran up against two tough clubs and were belted out In two days, but they'll remember that trip.the Red DevilsTwo brand new coaches are at the helm, Mike Miller is the head man and John Jaeger ie his assistant. Both are just out of Central Washington and eager for action.Gone from the Red Devil roster are Paul Hayte, Keith Johnson, John McGimpsey and Gary Ward, Back are some pretty fast, but small boys,We’re going to be a pressing club and a running club If we can steal a rebound here and there, Miller said. We're working on a man-to-man defense and the boys are In pretty good condition.’'I don’t know much about the rest of the league, but I hear Clallam Bay is loaded and Chimacum is reported to have a good squad,”Miller added. The Red Devils return Glen Halttunen, a 5.7 senior guard who’s a crack shot, Jim McGimpsey is another 5.6 speedster at guard, Don Black is a 6*3 senior center who will have to provide the muscle on the boards. Bill Noe! is a 6.2 freshman who looks good and will see a lot of action,Greg Arnold is a 5.8 veteran at for. ward, with Vernon Soeneke, a 5.10 senior, at another forward. He’s a good shot and recently moved back to Neah Bay from Calif# ornla after a five-year absence,Jerald McGimpsey Is a 5-9 sophomore, Scott Taylor Isa 5.8 guard, Gary Ray is a 5.10 freshman and Mel Halttunen is a 5-9*4 junior.Trying to protect the championship may be difficult for the Neah Ehy hoopsters, but they'll be a scrappy, hustling bunch and when they get you In the Devil gym, It’s wild!Year of the Irvin? The car headed back to Clallam Bay and the head man of the Bruins, Harold Van Riper,Is getting set for his third season at the helm. He’s of the opinion that his team has a chance to go all the way,Last year, Clallam Bay won 16 and lost 4, losing three of those in league play. Theyfinished five points out of first place. They had a strong club and only lost guard Doug CouveUer, forward Don Heikkila and center Wally Feist. We have plenty of experience,” Van Riper exclaimed, and we'll be a run and shoot club. We don’t have many patterns; it's more of a pro-style, set a screen and fire.”The Bruins will play man-to-man on defense, They have a tough schedule, with the likes of Mary Knight, Forks and Wishkah. They come off an unbeaten football season and that spirit just may catch on in basketball.HAROLD VAN RIPER , , . Could be the year.Clallam Bay rosterWhen Clallam opens at home against Neah Bay Tuesday, Don and Dan Wilson will be the forwards. The Wilson twins are 6-1, with Don at 168 and Dan at 170. They don’t say a lot, but they can score 25 apiece and defenders sometimes have problems figuring out which is which!Ken Sternbeck will be in the post. He’s 6-1 and 200. He led the team in scoring and rebounding as a sophomore, but was Injured most of last season. He could be a real help off the boards to start the break. The guards will probably be Brent You!-den and Rob Tulloch, Brent is also listed at 6-1 and 175, wiih Tulloch at 6-2 and 175. Both are juniors and both could be vital cogs In the Bruin scoring machine.Charles Hartman, a 5-11, 183 senior, should fit in any place with A1 Hamilton (5* 6), Dan Hanson (5-10), Brian Wiltala (5-10) and David Stock (5-9). Others on the roster are Jim Murray (5*8) and Tony Hernandez (5-10).Van Riper tabbed Chi ma cum as one of the teams to beat and said Qullcene is always tough for the Bruins. The Neah Bay team could give any team trouble at home, as can Joyce. The Bruins are big; they have the height and they have experience. They’d like to hustle all the way to Spokane and that’s the prize that goes to the North Olympic League winner,Friday franticsAll skiers or would-be skiers should take in the free ski show tonight at the Peninsula College student union building. The PC Ski Club is sponsoring the show at 7:45 and there promises to be something for everyone.Coach Jack Estes has his Peninsula Pirates ready for a big intra-squad contest Saturday night in the college dribble emporium. He’ll divide the squad and turn them loose, A small admission will be charged. Should be quite a show!Army hatties Navy tomorrow in Philadelphia, Navy coach Bill Elias says Middies started working on the Army game the evening of the game last year. When asked if the game would be just another contest, the Navy coach said, Are you kidding?” Army is favored, but net. ther team has an outstanding record. Still, 102,000 seats have been sold!Tiger hurier Denny McLain asked for 100 G’s, but Tiger brass talked him Into taking an estimated $85,000 salary for next year. That's almost 200 per cent increase in pay. To gain a tie, second-place New York must win its three remaining games and Dallas must lose its last two.The Redskins were hurt by penalties, including a pass interference call that set up a Dallas touchdown. And Graham also drew a 15 yard penalty forunsportsmanlike conduct.I thought the officials stole the game from us, Graham growled I've written the league officials several times complaining about the officiating. But never has it been this bad. I don't mind getting beat, and I can appreciate that the officials have judgment calls to make.
