*By Aftftocuted Pr*8«)A pair of record-setting quarterbacks head the 1965 Michigan small college All State team announced today by The Associated Press.Dave Nielson of Albion, the main cog in the Britons’ 7- 2 season, and Pat Boyd of Central Michigan are joined in the backfield by Bruce McLenna of Hillsdale and Tom Csmarich otMichigan Tech.One change was made in the selection of the team by the AP’s panel comprised of coaches and sports writers from around the state.An offensive and defensiveteam were selected instead of a first and second team with no regard to offense or defense.Albion dominates the 22-man squad with five players, while Northern Michigan and Kalamazoo each placed three men.Hillsdale College’s McLenna was joined by teammate Bob Mallendick at tackle on the offensive unit w'hile Dales Larry Fowler and Larry Barnett were •elected as honorable mention,pmp iipmppM;:i(ii T*BRUCE McLENNAoffensive ends, and Ron Turn-quest received honorable mention as an offensive guard.Hillsdale’s Doug Sattler, Dove Coffey and Tom Branch were mentioned as defensive halfbacks while Les Mallery andTen Dales Selected By Press Service For Michigan Football Honor SquadRalph Miller were recognized as honorable mention, linebackers. The Dales had ten players selected for the state honor squad.End John Ellinger and tackle Ron Springer joined Neilson on the offensive team, while Barry Siler, an end, and back Lloyd Harper were named to the defensive team.Northern Michigan players named were A1 Ische at guard on the offensive team and Byron Johnson at end and Curtis Marker at tackle on defense.Guard Phil Eder and center Dan Austin were selected on offense and Mike Ash at safety on defense for Kalamazoo.Bob Mallendick of Hillsdale is the other offensive tacklewhile Alma’s Denny Lynch grabbed the other end spot.Tackle Bob Parella and linebacker Jim Poburski, both of Olivet; linebacker Jim Gray of Alma, linebacker Roger Krcods-ma of Hope, back Roger Davidson of Adrian and safety A1 Bishop of Central Michigan complete the defensive team.Ellinger, Neilson and McLenna are repeaters from last year’s team while Mallendick was a second team choice in 1964.Neilson, highly regarded by the Detroit Lions and other National Football League teams, completed 66 of 156 passes for 978 yards and 15 touchdowns.He holds school records with the 15 scoring passes in a season as well as 39 in his career. His 994 yards gained through the air in 1964 and 2,697 yards in his career are his other records.Boyd’s chances in the pro leagues are somewhat slim because of his build. He’s only 5-foot-8 and weighs 170 pounds. But his statistics are enough to make any coach drool.Despite a so-so 5-5 record, the Chippewas set 21 school records and tied three others. Boyd had a hand in 15 of the new marks.His season records include 146 pass completions in 283 attempts for 1,604 yards. This helped him set career marks of 528 passes attempted and 259completions for 3,200 yards.McLenna became the first Hillsdale player in history to rush for more than 1,000 yards. He was drafted by the Lions last year and signed a 1966 contract with them last week.McLenna carried 168 times for 1,008 yards and was one of the leading scorers In the state with nine touchdowns and two extra points for 56 points.Csmarich, a junior, rushed for 373 yards in 81 carries andscored eight touchdowns. He also led the team in kickoff and punt returns. Michigan Tech won the NIC championship for the second time in three years.Ellinger, a top pro prospect who has decided to enter the ministry, holds seven Albion pass receiving marks.m „.
