WHL choosesChynoweth’sreplacementtions certainly make him an ideal person to take over.”ALLEN CAMERONKamloops Daily NewsKAMLOOPS, B.C.It was a whirlwind 24 hours for Dev Dley.Sunday afternoon, he was in Calgary meeting with the Western Hockey League board of governors.Monday, just moments after landing at Kamloops Airport, the 44-year-old Kamloops lawyer learned he had been named the new commissioner of the WHL.Even though Dley never officially applied for the job, the announcement didn’t come as a surprise.“I talked to a number of the governors, and they had asked if I would be interested in the position and I told them I was,” said Dley.In fact, it was Dley’s legal background that brought him in contact with the WHL in the first place. He’s served as the league’s legal counsel for the last five years, and has also done some player representative work, notably for former Kamloops Blazers Craig Bonner and Bob Westerby.Dley will take the helm in early January when Ed Chynoweth officially steps down after 23 years with the league. Chynoweth will head a new WHL franchise in Edmonton next season.«I am pleased to see that the board of governors has selected Dev Dley to be my successor,” said Chynoweth. “There were numerous worthy candidates who applied for the position, but Dev’s qualificaKamloops Blazers’ president and governor Colin Day said the league decision to hire Dley reflected on the growing importance of having someone with a legal background in the league office.“It sort of shows where the league is going,” said Day.“They’re starting to realize that►the job needs a tremendous amount of legal background because of all of the things that are happening with respect to player contracts, drafts and negotiating with the NHL. I think that’s the way the league is going to have to go and they picked the right guy for it.”Dley says it will be tough to beatthe job Chynoweth did.“The biggest challenge is going to be keeping the tradition that Ed Chynoweth has set,” said Dley. “The one thing about this league that has made this position appealing is the fact the governors are very competitive on the ice, but they recognize that they’re a partnership off the ice. The boardrooms and the governors’ meetings have always reflected that.”“I have a lot to live up to, huge shoes to fill,” he admitted. “You have to always keep in mind that there’s only one Ed Chynoweth and one shouldn’t expect that the next commissioner will be another Ed Chynoweth. He can’t be replaced for what he’s done in this league.” ; _
