Great players.Yes, it was another great year for high school football teams in the South SuburbsTwo teams and six members of The Star’s 44-player All-Area football team will be on center stage this weekend at the Illinois High School Association state championships in Normal.One of the teams is Providence Catholic of New Lenox, which will meet hometown favorite Bloomington for the Class 4A championship Friday night at Hancock Stadium. Providence, which won the state title in 1987, will be led by quarterback Chris Orr, receiver Greg Keigher, linebacker Tom Manzella and defensive back Jeff Schley.Quarterback Mike McGrew and defensive back Tony Mazurkiewicz have seen nothing but gold medals during their journey at Mount Carmel in Chicago. Saturday afternoon they’ll be hunting for the school’s fourth straight state championship in a Class 5A rematch with Wheaton Central.The Star and Pepsi-Cola will honor the entire All-Area team at a banquet Wednesday, Dec. 11 at the Holiday Inn Chicago South/Harvey. National Football League referee Don Hakes of South Holland will be the featured speakerProvidence, Andrew, Richards, Bremen, Mount Carmel, Marian Catholic, Homewood-Flossmoor and Thornton combined for a 79-12 won-loss record and 25 spots on the All-Area team.Here’s a complete look at The Star’s All-Area football team:QUARTERBACKSFloyd Coloman, Thornton — The 6-foot-4, 185-pound senior directed his team to an 8-3 season, completing 65 passes for 1,188 yards and 11 touchdowns.Joeeo Kikk«rt, TF South — The 6-3,180 senior ranked as the area’s most prolific passer with 1,715 yards and a school-record 19 touchdowns. He had just three interceptions.Mlk# McGrow, Mount Carmol — The 6-1, 182 senior was voted the No. 1 player in the Chicago Catholic League, earned the prestigious Tony Lawless Award. He is the Caravan’s all-time leader in offensive production with more than 3,100 yards, 28 rushing touchdowns and 18 passing touchdowns.Josh Mattlo, Marian Catholic — The 5-6, 145 senior completed 59 percent of his passes for the East Suburban Catholic co-champion. He established school records for passing yards (1,328) and touchdowns (18).Chris Orr, Rrovldanca Catholic — The 6-1,171 senior led the Celtics to the Class 4A state title with 109 pass completions, 1,797 yards and a school-record 28 touchdowns.LINEMENMika Klutcharch, Oak Lawn — The 6-1, 230 senior was the leader of Oak Lawn’s first trip to the state playoffs since 1986 Voted the No. 2 player in the SICA North.Mark Lovrlch, Stagg — A 6-2, 240 senior played a key role in the Chargers' 7-3 state-qualifying season. SICA North all-star guard two straight years.Andy Odahnal, thopard — The 6-3, 245 senior ranked as one of the top linemen in the SICA North. A three-year starter in the line, Andy’s a two-time allconference selection.Kavln Patarson, Lockport — The 6-4,250 senior was voted the top offensive lineman in the SICA West, working at the tackle position on both sides of the lineTad Sarama, Bloom Trail — The 6-3, 260 senior was the leader in the line for a team that rushed for 1,798 yards (5.1 average). He had five sacks on defense Ranks third academically in his class.RUNNING BACKSEd Amandola, Stagg — The 5-7,175 senior was voted the top running back in SICA North, ranking fourth in the area in rushing with 1,217 yards and 16 touchdownsMlchaal Blair, Thornwood — The 6-0,205 senior was a big reason for the Thunderbirds’ mid-season turnaround, totaling 1,068 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns and 650 yards as a punt and kick returner.Ray Cockarham, Bloom — The 5-10,175 senior was busy on both sides of the football for the Trojans He finished with 1,058 rushing yards (5.7 average) and 18 touchdowns Led area in scoring with 130 points.Tarry Danttlar, Bremen — The 6-0, 170 seniorwas voted the top running back in the SICA Central, playing a big role in Bremen’s conference championship and 10-1 season He rushed for 949 yards, fumbling just twice in 151 carriesAaron Henderaon, Shepard — The 5-10, 175 senior finished as the area’s third best rusher with 1,274 yards in 242 carries and 14 touchdowns.Mika Joyce, Momewood-Floesmoor — The 6-0, 185 junior ran for a school-record 1,367 yards, averaging 7.3 yards per carry and scoring 18 touchdownsHakes All-Area speakerDon Hakes of South Holland, a referee in the National Football League, will be the featured speaker at The Star's All-Area football banquet Wednesday. Dec 11 in HarvevCliff Porry, Rich South — The 5-10, 185 junior rushed for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games, finishing with a 7.0 average per carry. Rushed for record 345 yards against Tinley Park.Joo Schissier, Brother Rice — The 6-1, 180 senior was the area’s leading rusher with 289 carries for 1,617 yards and 16 touchdowns on a 9-4 team.RECEIVERSDarrin Aehford, Rich East — The 6-0,170 senior caught 34 passes for 618 yards and eight touchdowns.Brian Budeselich, TF South — One of the most versatile players was this 6-2,180 senior end-linebacker. He caught 24 passes for 485 yards and nine touchdowns Totaled 51 tackles (eight for losses) and two sacks on defense.Chris Canada, Homawood-Flossmoor — The5-11,165 senior grabbed 36 passes for 619 yards and six touchdowns as the Vikings extended their SICA East winning streak to 32 games.Grog Kaighar, Providanca Catholic — The5-9, 165 senior grabbed 38 passes for 723 yards (18.9 average) and 13 touchdowns. Overall, he has 15 touchdowns and five interceptions.DEFENSIVE LINEMANTony Bizzisrt, Richards — The 5-8, 214 senior had the best season of any Bulldog down lineman. He had 28 solo tackles and 61 assists.Emmatt Cunnana, Andraw — The 5-11, 215 senior was voted the top defensive lineman in the SICA West, finishing as the second leading tackier (28 solos, 63 assists, eight sacks) on a Class 6A semifinalist.Anthony Jonas, Richards — The 6-5,251 senior is on our All-Area team for the second straight year. He missed four games, but still had 24 solo tackles, 39 assists, nine sacks and one caused fumble.Stirling Luckay, Thornton — The 6-4,220 senior ranks as one of the state’s top players. A two-way standout, he totaled 50 solo tackles, 55 assists, three fumble recoveries and 15 sacks on defense. He also blocked five kicks.Kerwin Waldroup, Rich Central — The 6-3, 245 senior made 80 tackles (17 for losses), six sacks and caused three fumbles.LINEBACKERSDarak Bryant, Hillcrest — The 6-2, 220 senior recorded two sacks, 24 solo tackles, 42 first-man tackles and 41 assists. Bryant is the career school leader in tackles with 326.John Colaman, Lincoln-Way — The 6-3, 225 senior played in only six games due to injuries, but had 40 solo tackles, 60 assists, six sacks and two fumble recoveries.Mark Cross, Rich Cantral — The 6-2, 225 senior totaled 101 tackles in 10 games for a school record. He made 12 tackles for losses and caused six fumbles.Dava Curtin, Braman — The 6-0, 210 senior is a two-time All-Area selection. While leading the Braves to a SICA Central title, he earned all-conference status at linebacker and offensive guard. He finished with 96solo tackles (18 for losses) and five quarterback sacks.Pat Fitzgarald, Sandburg — The 6-2,185 junior was a standout on both sides of the line, starring on defense with 61 solo tackles, four interceptions and two sacks.Chris Koappan, Richards — The 6-1,224 senior is making his second straight appearance on our All-Area team. The standout linebacker finished with 54 solo tackles, 80 assists, four sacks, three interceptions and two caused fumbles.Tom Manzalla, Providanca Catholic — The6-1, 188 senior has been one of the keys to the Celtics’ defensive success and a berth in the Class 4A state finals. He has 50 solo tackles, 87 assists, two sacks andtwo interceptions.Scott Millar, Andraw — The 6-0, 215 senior was ranked as the top linebacker in the SICA West. A two-year starter for a team that lost just once in 13 games, he led the team on the tackle chart with 101.Bob O'Connor, Richards — The 6-2, 227 senior two-way standout helped key the Bulldogs to an 11-1 record. Voted the No. 1 player in the SICA North, he had 39 solo tackles, 45 assists and six sacks.Ed Ramos, Homawood-Flossmoor — The 5-11, 200 senior ranked as one of the top players for the champion Vikings in the SICA East. The captain of the defense had 117 tackles, five sacks, one interception andone fumble recovery.Bob Shalton, Marian Catholic — The 5-11, 200 senior had 57 solo tackles, 82 assists and three sacks. He ranks third at the Chicago Heights school in career tackles (237). He twice tied the single-game school record for tackles with 22.DEFENSIVE BACKSEric Broxtarman, Marian Catholic — The 6-1,185 senior two-way standout finished with 16 solos, 21 assists and two interceptions. He also totaled 599 yards on offense.Tony Mazurklawicz, Mount Carmal — The5-10, 188 senior is the captain and emotional leader of the defense, registering 61 tackles, three interceptions and four fumble recoveries.Mika McKibban, Andraw — The 6-1,190 senior was named the top player in the SICA West. He had seven interceptions, finishing his two-year career with 13. “Mike's the best strong safety I’ve ever coached,” said Coach Mike O’Neill.Marvin O’Naal, Richards — The 5-8,167 senior had an ability to make the big play with eight interceptions (three returned for touchdowns). “He was the best defender in our league,” said Coach Gary Korhonen.Jaff Piatrzyk, Andraw — The 5-10, 175 senior was voted the No. 2 (behind teammate McKibben) defensive back in the SICA West.
