Vikings RompiIn Cage Debut«Defending champion Central Heights opened the basketball season with a hot hand in destroying Prairie View, 72-51, in a first-round game in the Three Rivers League tournament Monday night at CH.Firing in 59 percent of their field goals during the contest, the Vikings opened with an 11-point cushion in the first period and were up by a 40-26 count at the half. They coasted in from there behind the play of Tom Cox, Leroy Kratzberg and Steve Oestreicher.The victory put CH into Wednesday’s semifinals where it meets Monday night’s Pomona-Crest winner at 8 p.m., on the Heights home floor.Other first-round games Monday were played between Marmaton Valley and Jayhawk-Linn at LaCygne andPleasanton and Uhiontown at Uniontown.Cox, a 6-2 junior, popped in 20 points to lead the CH romp, while Kratzberg added 15, plus 14 rebounds, and Oestreicher chipped in with 10 tallies. The Vikes ruled the boards as well as theGridscoring end of the game, out-rebounding Prairie View, 44-25.But mostly, the losers couldn’t keep pace offensively. They got off 16 more shots than Heights but made only 24 of them for 36 percent, although Bill White was the game’s high scorer with 25 points.In the girls’ segment of the tourney, the CH gals weren’t as fortunate earlier in the evening at Heights, as Prairie View blasted the Vlkes, 62-31, with* Mower pouring in 26 points.PV out-scored the ho6ts 29-11 in the second half to key that runaway. The CH girls hit only 11 of 40 shots from the field and nine of 23 free throws.Julie Hesse was high for the Vikings with 10 points. Lisa Wichman was next with 7.In another girls’ first-round encounter, Crest edged Pomona, 33-32.
