JOHN OUTLAND•M* j Pennsylvania’8 $few FootbaJl Captain* '..wli John Outland was born in 1875, July 7, in an agricultural district of Kansas.; He spent many of his early days in active work about his home. He early displayed a disposition to read extensively, and spent idle hours in history and works of substantial authors.I Out of door exercise, gunning, skating and athletics always occupied much of Outland’s leisure moments, and that probably accounts for the magnificent phy-■ sique of Penn’s new captain A ■* *-' ' I ’•After graduating in the public schools, Outland entered the University of Kansas In 1894. He took a two years’ course a*. Kansas, playing football, however, on the ’Varsity only in ’95. This leaves two more years for the captain-elect to play at Pennsylvania, according to the recent restrictions.| He entered Pennsylvania in ’90. choosing medicine as his profession. He | tried for the red and blue team in 96, but was ineligible through a huling which reads that no freshman in a professional school shall participate in athletics until he has passed one year’s examinations.’’ j Outland showed that he was made of good material, when he stuck at it ! throughout the year cn the scrub team, of which he was captain.This year he had no trouWe making a tackle on the ’Varsity, although he had played at half at Kansas and on the scrub.Outland is possessed of the strength of moral character so essential to a eap-: tain. There is not a more pepular, at the same time, modest and retiring man : attending Pennsylvania, and w’e all join hands in wishing the new leader all I the success possible.
