Petes are standing bybutsomecash neededTORONTO (CP) — Kd Chynoweth says that, despite reports to the contrary, Canada will participate in the world junior hockey championships next month in Finla nd.Chynoweth, board chairman of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League,said Mondav that the CMJHL has co-%roperated fully, “since Day 1,” in providing a team for the tournament.Chynoweth said in a statement the CMJHL is paying the costs of equipment and extended insurance coverage for the players attending the competition in Finland and “Canada will he represented at this year's world junior tournament David Branch, CMJHL executive director, said the team — Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League, supplemented by about eight other juniors — is standing by and the only holdup now is the necessary funding to cover the costs of transportation, meals and accommodation“We are taking steps to hopefully secure that necessary financial backing,”Branch saidThe Canadian Amateur Hockev As-%social ion said last week it had decided not to send a team because of financial problems.Gunther Sabetzki, president of tin International Ice Hockey Federation, responded by saying Canada faced demotionto the second division in future junior tournaments if it was not represented at this year's global tourney, which begins1 )ee 26 in Helsinki.Responding to charges by Lou Lefaive, director of Sport Canada and chairman of Hockey C anada, that junior teams are hesitant to supply players, Chynoweth said:“Lefaive has no idea what is going on outside his ivory tower in Ottawa. He has not spoken to anyone connected with theCMJHL in the last 10 years and vet he* *continually expounds what our thinking and policies are.“If he is so concerned about Canada s image overseas, why doesn't he put his Sport Canada hat on and give us the money that we requested for this project back in December, 1978?“As it is now, we have had to turn to the provincial government of Ontario forpossible support.The Petes’ executive had asked Steve Paproski, federal minister of fitness and amateur sport, to check into the matter after being advised of tin situation by the ( AHAHowever, Paproski told the C AHA last September there would be no federal funds forthcoming for the junior team and last week advised the Commons that funds for amateur sport were overdrawn $2.8 million.Karlier Monday, a published report quoted Bill Domm. member of Parliament for Peterborough, as saying the situation “looks pretty encouraging, and that the ( AHA and Hockey C anada appeared set to resolve the financial problems.Reuben Baetz, Ontario minister of culture and recreation, told the legislature on Monday that his government would not provide any financial backingHe said the federal government and the national sports organizations have exclusive responsibility for Canadian representation in world championshipevents, regardless the team’s provincial origin“The controversy over funding for these championships is probably more a product of the conflicts and the squabbling between these two organizations ( Hockey Canada and the ( AHA and withthe federal government, than it is a matter of availability of funds “Opposition Leader Stuart Smith urged the minister “to get hold of his federal counterpart and make darned certain that” the team goes to Finland and that ( anada does not become “the laughing stock of international hockey dealings.”
