Basketball begins at Chinle HighWilh football season over, the Chinle Wildcats have taken to the hardwood floor and basketball season has once again returned to Chinle High School. Coach Gene Slaton's Wildcat Basketball Team began practice on Monday. November 10. with six returning lettcrmen, including three starters from last season: Terry Smith. Wayne Durand and Charlie Govcr The other three lettermcn are Tsosie Brown Jr.. Walter Gorman and Tracey Yazzie. Some 34 boys actually came out for the first practice and these will be divided up among the three coaches: Gene Slaton with the varsity. Ken Rice with the J.V. and Byron Becksteadwith the freshmen. In addition to the three returning varsity starters, wc will have Tsosie Brown. Jr.. starting as a forward and the other sturting position will be a toss-up between several very capable WildcatsThe Wildcats will be facing a tougher schedule this year with the addition of several out of state teams. Shiprock. Kirtland. Gallup High, all from New Mexico and Blanding of Southern Utah have been added to the Wildcat schedule The boys are eager to defend their Class A” North Title and return to the state tournament for the third consecutive year. Last year's loss to Peoria by two points in the semi-finals at the State Tournament was a big disappointment lor the Wildcats and they will be trying extra hard to go all the way this year. Although ihe Wildcats have an average of 511 this year, ihey hope to make up in speed, what theylack in height.
