uAut it arid win irmttGirls’ and boys’ basketball teams, representing the State Center high school, opened the 194 7-4 8 season in impressive fashion by winning three out of four games last week, the former trimming the LaMollle sextet 3G to 26 and nosing out the Clemons lassies 3 2 to 31 and the latter blasting the LaMollle boys 52 to 18 and losing to the Clemons dribblers 39 to 27.In the opening game here last Wednesday night, the State Center sextet played rather raggedly against the less experienced visitors from LaMoiUe. With the exception of lone field goals by Martha Vickers and Cecilia Huff, Reba Jay. a veteran of three years of basketball at State Center High, scored all of the points in the contest which were made from the field. Nine baskets and 4 charity tosses gave her a total of 22 points for the evening. Vickers sank four free throws while Ruth Huff and Cecilia Huff each had three! one-pointers to their credit. Other starters in the girls game were Pauline Thake, Dorothy Huff and Mary Griffiths, all guards. Other girls to see action in the opener included Kathleen Hartwig, Dawn Houghton, Jean Pfantz, Marylou Weuve and Bette Douglas. The local girls were ahead S to 6 at the end of the first quarter, extended their lead to 16 to 9 at half time and were leading 27 to 19 at the end of the third period.With Norbert Baumgart, sophomore forwdtd, hitting the hoop from all angles, the State Center boys bad little trouble with the LaMollle cagers in the first boys’ game of the season. He collected 8 field goals and 2 free tosses for a total of 18 points. Another second year player, Janies West, played an outstanding game for the locals at the guard position. He also hit the basket for 3 goals and one free throw. Paired with these hoys in the opening line-up were Win Watson, another sophomore, at the forward position, Stanley Riemenschneider, a senior, at center, and Dick Daters, a junior, at. the other guard slot.
