Sam Flora constructs Ne-Ca-Hi grid legacyBy Kayleen CubbalNew Castle NewsFor decades now, it has been somewhat of an unwritten rule.If your name is Flora, you play football for New Castle High School.And if your name is Flora and you play football for New Castle High School, you play it better than most - if not all - of those around you.Although Denny Flora Jr. gained perhaps the most notoriety when he became the school’s all-time leading rusher this season, there have been five Floras to come down the pike in the glorious tradition of New Castle football since Sam Flora emerged as a star tailback from 1943-45. There are two more on the way in New Castle’s junior high program and a couple more who are currently displaying their talents in the Shenango system.Sam Flora and his three sons, Sam A., Denny and Ricky, have two things in common in addition to the family name. All were tailbacks. And all were very, very good.Sam Flora, now 67 years old, served as coach of the East Side Rams of the New Castle Midget Football League for 31 years before stepping aside in 1992. Starting in the backyard and continuing through midgets, all of the Flora children were introduced to the game of football, but none was pushed to pursue it.But for those who did choose to take it a step further, they were permitted to do so under one condition.“Once you made that commitment, you had to stick with it,” Sam said. “There was no missing practice, no giving less than your all.
