Insurance puts skids on effort to open ski hillby GKEG McCOMB Sun StaffBrandon skiers anxious to hit the slopes of Mount Glenorkey may have to wait as efforts to reopen the local ski hill have run into a a roadblockNorris Murray, director of the Brandon Winter Recreation Community Club, said the group is having trouble getting liability insurance for the hill. One policy offered to them, for example, would insure the club for a maximum of $200,000 with an annual premium of $4,000.“That really isn’t enough coverage so we are still digging around,” he saidMr. Murray said other options being explored by volunteers include forming a private club where members would sign a waiver, or persuading the Rural Municipality of Whitehead to buy the hill and cover it under their policy.Volunteers will discuss these options at a meeting at the Agricultural Extension Centre Monday at 8 p.m.The Glenorkey ski hill, five kilometres northwest of Brandon, has been closed for the last three years because of a lack of snow and organization. That meant Brandon skiers had to travel either 60 kilometres to theMinnedosa hill or 160 kilometres to the Agassiz ski resort for a day’s outing.Volunteers appear to be enthusiastic about starting up Glenorkey again. At a meeting last week, Mr. Murray said they will have little trouble getting $2,000 worth of repairs needed to upgrade the equipment and chalet.Originally, it was estimated that $900 would be needed to replace windows broken by vandals but some used windows were found for $50, he said.Co-operation from Mother Nature is also needed as about 12centimetres of snow is still needed for skiing on the hill. It has a 305-metre slope, a tow rope and ski rentals.Mr. Murray said if they can open the hill this year, next year they may look at purchasing snowmaking equipment and improving washroom facilities.
