Sparking that great team were two remarkable backs, Lelandetusco:btlt;cS'Yh\ecr(Bussell and Charles McCullough. Bussell was the greatest breakaway runner in the state, and j si McCullough was terrific at! w broken-field running. In that year, Neosho trounced Thayer 60-14 in the Ozark Bowl.Coach J. Ellis Latimer took over for Rhode in 1943, and headed a fighting team which suffered but one defeat fat the hands of Monett) and took cochampionship honors. Star backs of that season were Paul Anderson and Jerry Fly, making a power combination which gained ground the hard way.Last year, in the absence of a i v regular coach, “Molly” Mat- I i thews stepped in to guide a hopeful squad through another war-time season. The locals suffered two defeats and a tie within the Big Eight, but on the whole upheld the Wildcat reputation.This year, coach Bill Pierce, lover of athletic development and competition, was the sta- t bilizing influence for a team of ‘ experienced, hard-training men j who had early intentions of copping a championship. The regular eleven, ten of whom are seniors, and the active substitutes, gave all for the team’s benefit. That factor broke the hopes of Monett, defending champs and runners-up for this year’s title. The same Wildcat characteristic stopped Nevada, Webb City and Carthage. In several of the games, Neosho came from behind to win.Now these well-deserving athletes have been selected to play Mountain Grove Friday night in the annual Ozark Bowl classic.
