Seniors Bolster Parkview Hopes§ORFORDVILLE—The Parkview Vikings won’t be the most successful or talented high school basketball team this season. But it’s possible that they could be one of the most exciting.Tom Neuenschwander, the Vikings’ new head coach, is honest and realistic about his team’s chances for this season But, at the same time, he’s proud of his players and their efforts “A 500 season is about the best we could do this year,” admits Neuenschwander. I sure hope we reach that. But we’re getting excellent leadership from our seniors this season, and we re getting great hustle and desire from everyone. I’m proud of them.”The Vikings have only one letterman from last season’s 6-13 team He’s Joel DeLorme, a 5-10 senior guard “Joel started for us last year,” said his coach “He’s got an excellent shot at all-conference this season He’s a good outside shooter, the best on our team. He’s also our best defensive player.“We named him team captain—he’s our leader,” continued Neuenschwander. “He’s not the yelling type. He leads by example ”The other guard in the Parkview 2-1-2 offense is 5-7 senior Brad Cowan, the quickest player on the Viking squad According to his coach, Cowan fits perfectly into the team’s plans to apply pressure during the entire game One of the starting forwards will be Tom Ballou, a 6-1 senior “Tom has more hustle and desire thanDeLorme Clarkanybody on the team,” explained Neuenschwander “He makes up for any lack of talent by his great hustle. He’ll help us on defense and on the boards ”The other starter at forward will be junior Dave Osborne Besides being the only non-senior in the starting lineup, he may be one of the most talented The 6-1 hustler is a good rebounder who’s both quick and strong Osborne scored 20 points in the Vikings’ opening loss to Monticello, and he gives Neuenschwander a good reason to smile about next year. The starting center for Parkview is senior Lonnie Clark, who’s only 5-11. Clark plays the high post and is the hub of the Viking offense Lonnie isn’t that talented a player, but he’s extremely intelligent,” said his coach ‘‘He doesn’t make many mistakrnmmgumn *Osborne Balloues. We’ll run a lot of plays and use his ability to pass and set picks.”The first man off the bench may be the most interesting Parkview player of all. He’s Kari Hamalainen, a senior transfer student from Finland Hamalainen is a 5-10 guard who has been a surprise to Neuenschwander.“I just found out about Kari this year,” Neuenschwander said “He’s really a fine player. It's taken him time to adapt to our rules here They never play a rone defense over there, so when we go into ours, he’s lost“He’s a fine ball handler. He was the second best runner in cross country this year, so I knew he was a good athlete He’s quick and goes to the boards like an animal He’s penetrates very well—he’s sure not passive ”, Another pleasant surprise toNeuenschwander was his becoming the head coach this season. Former head coach Ken Sisson left Parkview after the school year began, and suddenly the job belonged to Neuenschwander “Yes, I was very surprised,” he ex plained. “I was overjoyed at this opportunity. Now we’ve got to make the most of it.”Neuenschwander is returning to coach at the school where he once was a standout player. He’s returning home, trying to bring success to a program that has seen some lean years “We’re going to play some exciting basketball,” he said “We’re going to apply pressure the entire game. We call ourselves the ‘floorburn defense’ And we re going to run the ball when we can We’re going to have a hustling team ” The Vikings open their Rock Valley Conference season Dec 2 at home against Beloit Turner The remaining Parkview schedule:xNov. 19-At East Troy Dec. 2— Beloit Turner xDec 4- Beloit Catholic Dec 9-At Milton Dec 14-Jefferson Dec 20-At Clinton Jan. 4— Brodhead Jan 10-Edgerton Jan 13—At Evansville Jan 20—At Beloit Turner xJan. 24—At River Valley Jan 27—Milton Feb 3—At Jefferson Feb 7—Clinton Feb 10-At Brodhead Feb 17—At Edgerton Feb 23—At Evansville x—nonconferenceBowlinaSrnrPc 1 Elks’ Fourth Quarter
