The boxing matches involving young fighters from Carlsbad, Hobbs and Roswell will get under way at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Cave City.Representing the newly formed Hobbs Boxing Club will be Florentine (FloryJ Velasquez, weighing in at 132 pounds and fighting in the lightweight division; Sieve Espinoza. 130, junior lightweight: Adam Outfa, 150, junior middleweight; and Leroy Pacheco. 140, junior welterweight.In all, some 15 young men ranging in ages from 14 to 20 are working out in the local boxing program, which began three months ago. Heading the local boxing club, under the sponsorship of the Hobbs Fraternal Order of Police, ore trainer Sabmo Rodriguez and coach Luts Mora.Neither Rodriguez nor Mora is exactly a stranger to the ring sport. Both are former professionals.Rodriguez, who has been in Hobbs since January,, fought for ll years as an amateur and professional. He compiledan impressed 67-3 won-loetrecord in eight years as an amateur in the Golden Glovesund U.S. Marines boxing programs. As a professional fighting out-of California and Texas, Rodriguez had two draws and two losses in jfi fights in the lightweight division.Mora fought for four years as a heavyweight in California.Rodriguez said that the 15 boys involved in the program have been training for three months on a two-nightper-week basis since last summer. The young boxers get together for training sessions from 0 to 9 p.m. each Monday and Thursday at. Will RogersCommunity Center.Although Rodriguez and Mora are working in the program on a strictly volunteer basis and are paying for some of Ihe club’s expenses out of their own pockets, the local Fraternal Order of Police and Hobbs Police Lt.
