The event starts at 6:30 p.m.University of Illinois football coach Lou Tepper will be the featured speaker.Richards and Thornton each placed five players on the star-studded list, while Marian Catholic landed four spots. Rich East and Sandburg were honored with three players each.Here’s a complete look at The Star’s All-Area football team:QUARTERBACKSMark Broxterman, Marian Catholic— The6-0, 178 senior guided the Spartans to an 8-3 record, completing 87 of 164 passes for 1,124 yards and 19 touchdowns, allowing just six interceptions. He rushed for four touchdowns.Greg Murphy, Richards — The 6-1, 181 senior completed 99 of 197 passes for 1,947 yards and 26 touchdowns, giving up just three interceptions as he led the Bulldogs to a 10-2 record and SICA North championship.Antwaan Randle El, Thornton — The 5-9, 165 sophomore found the mark for 60 completions in 124 attempts for 1,202 yards and 17 touchdowns during the regular season,leading the Wildcats to a 9-1 record.Ted Reichert, Homewood-Flossmoor —The 6-1, 190 senior is one of the most versatilequarterbacks this area has ever seen. He hascompleted 103 of 185 passes for 1,731 yards and 26 touchdowns. Only three interceptions. As a rusher, he had 172 carries for 979 yards and 21touchdowns.Quincy Woods, Rich East — The 6-2, 180 senior made more things happen than a magician, connecting on 133 of 279 passes for 2,204 yards and 20 touchdowns, in addition to rushing 67 times for 414 yards and seven touchdowns.LINEMENMark Cortez, Andrew — The 6-4, 260 senior was nominated for all-state by SICA We6t coaches. He was Andrew’s bright spot in a dismal season, consistently grading high as aPat Damron, TF South — The 6-2, 300 senior was the heart of the Rebels’ rush to the Class 4A semifinals and a school-record 10 victories in 13 starts. A four-year varsity starter, Damron was a two-way standout, playing a key role in TF South’s underrated offense.Dan Ketelaar, Providence Catholic — The 6-5, 235 junior, a two-year starter at righttackle, helped key the team’s offense, grading high in every game for an offense that has gained 4,000 yards.Matt McKenna, Mount Carmel — The 6-0, 191 senior center earned All-Catholic League North status, helping the Caravan to a 10-2 record. He played a key role in Mount Carmel’s offense, which totaled more than 3,400 yards (9.9 yards per carry).Jeremy O’Connell, Richards — The 6-2, 234 senior was the team’s top lineman, grading over 80 percent as a blocker. The team scored 439 points. At tackle on defense he had 28 assists, 41 unassisted and four sacks.BACKSLael Booth, Richards — The 6-0, 196 senior had his season cut short in the regular season after carrying the football 156 times for 1,003 yards and 16 touchdowns.ReSgie Gage, Thornton — The 5-11, 185 junior carried the football 129 times for 1,262 yards and 17 touchdowns for the 9-1 Wildcats, who captured the SICA East championship.Michael Gooden, Thornwood — The 6-2, 210 senior carried the football 194 times for 1,533 yards (7.9 average) and 22 touchdowns. He caught four passes for 127 yards. 'Jeff Janecek, Sandburg — The 5-11, 195 senior was the key to the Eagles’ running game with 1,119 yards in 148 carries and 12 touchdowns. ,Joe Schley, Providence Catholic — The 5-9, 168 senior has totaled 1,853 yards in 250 carries for a 7.3 yards. Joe had 36 touchdowns (30 rushing), with two receiving, two punt returns and two kickoff returns.Melvin Williams, Tinley Park — The 6-0, 195 senior, at a school with a history of great running backs, now ranks at the top for a singleseason performance, totaling 1,674 yards in 231 carries (7.2 average) and 17 touchdowns. Eight pass catches for 159 yards and one TD, and six kick returns for 210 yards and one TD.ENDSKenny Carrington, Richards — The 6-3,191 senior had 66 catches for 1,407 yards and 23 touchdowns. A major college prospect, he had a 91-yard pass catch against Thornton and a 91-yard punt return against Shepard.Sean Egglesfield, Marian Catholic — The 5-10, 154 senior had 46 catches for 625 yards (13.6 average) and 10 touchdowns. He had 10 touchdowns, 20 extra-point kicks and two field goals for 86 points. Marian’s all-time career leader in receptions, receiving yardage and touchdown receiving.Kevin Fahey, Sandburg — The 5-10, 180 senior caught 42 passes for 730 yards and six touchdowns. “A self-motivated, gifted athlete,” said Sandburg Coach Mike Navarro. When Fahey was on the field, you had to know whereabouts. Defensively, he had 42 tackles, 23 assists and two interceptions.Jack Golden, Thornton — The 6-3, 21*5 senior was nominated for all-state by SICA East coaches, grabbing 16 passes for 300 yards and delivering outstanding blocking for one of the area’s most powerful teams.Alonzo Moyer, Homewood-Flossmoor —The 5-11, 175 senior had 42 catches for 755 yards, an 18.0 average and 12 touchdowns and three extra points. He also had two conversion catches and two kick returns for touchdowns.Tai Streets, Thornton — The 6-4, 190 seniorwas nominated for all-state by SICA East coaches, totaling 30 catches for 721 yards and 10 touchdowns, also returning a punt for a touchdown. One of the area’s most explosive players.DEFENSIVE LINEMENEugene Childs, Hillcrest — The 6-3, 185 senior had 70 total tackles for the SICA Central co-champ. Explosive two-way threat. At linebacker he had 14 sacks and five fumble recoveries.Brian Gatch, Rich East — The 6-2, 215senior had 62 total tackles, including seven for losses. Voted the top linebacker in SICA South. Also, a solid performer at tight end.Chris Havens, Homewood-Flossmoor —The 6-2, 230 senior had 69 first-man tackles and 49 assists, two knockdowns, two caused fumbles,two recovered fumbles and two interceptions. Six of the tackles were for losses of 43 yards.Jeff Knowles, Providence Catholic — The6-3, 215 senior has 54 solo tackles, 84 assists,three sacks, two interceptions and has scored one touchdown for a Celtic team that has outscored its opponents 497-170.Jerry Verde, Marian Catholic — The 6-2, 198 senior has 32 solo tackles, 50 assists, nine tackles for losses and one interception for an 8-3 team. Top defensive player in the East Suburban Catholic. All-time Marian leader in tackles.BACKSMark Crotty, Oak Forest — The 5-8, 150 senior was second on the team in tackles (plus assists) with 71, in addition to three fumble recoveries, two interceptions and three quarterback sacks. Offensively at quarterback he totaled 702 yards rushing in 102 carries (seven touchdowns) and completed 58 of 106 passes for 998 yards and 11 touchdowns.Jeff Gaston, Rich East — The 6-0, 165 senior had 32 total tackles and two fumble recoveries, leading the area in interceptions with eight, including one return for a touchdown for theSICA South champs.Bucky Glickley, Marian Catholic — The 5-11, 162 senior had 39 solo tackles, 45 assists and one interception, turning in top efforts against Mount Carmel and Joliet Catholic.Tony Pryor, Shepard — The 6-1, 185 senior was voted the No. 1 defensive player in the SICA North. A two-way standout, Pryor had 40 tackles, 41 assists, six knocked down passes and two interceptions.Curtis Randle El, Thornton — The 5-10, 180 junior had five interceptions and ranked near the top of the team’s tackle chart for the SICA East champs. “One of the top defensive backs in the area,” said Thornton Coach BillMo6el.William Reed, Mount Carmel — The 5-10, 170 senior is an all-Catholic League selection from Hazel Crest. He had 35 tackles, four passes broken up and two interceptions for the Catholic League champion. He scored the winning touchdown against Loyola when he blocked a punt and recovered it for a touchdown.Pat Rush, Providence Catholic — The 6-0, 191 opportunistic senior had 50 solo tackles, 44 assists, six sacks, one fumble recovery and two interceptions.
