Junior talks hit snag, series may be cancelledOTTAWA (CP) - The Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) Thurs-day moved to block the World Hockey Associa-tion’s 18-game European series scheduled for early next year after talks concerning the signing of eight under-age juniors broke down.CAHA president GordonRenwick officially notified the International Ice Hockey Federation (JIHF), the world governing body, that the WHA was not in good standing with it.Now it’s up to them, Renwick said. “I don'tknow how long the process takes.”IIHF bylaws state that all international games between members need permission from the national federation, which in this case is the CAHA.Earlier this month the WHA had agreed to a down payment of $170,000 for the juniors. The WHA also agreed to pay $150,000 by July, 1979, if the players remain in the WHA following the National Hockey League’s amateur draft in June. But the WHA threw a wrench into the worksMonday by insisting the CAHA drop a claim to a $150,000 insurance bond it put up in 1977 as a guarantee against signing ju-niurs.But the bond issue was a totally separate issue and the WHA agreed to that,” said Ed Chenowyth, executive director of the Canadian Major Junior Hockey League, junior hockey’s umbrella organization. That was decided during closed meetings in Ottawa two weeks ago between Sport Minister Iona Cam-pagnolo and officials of the CAHA, WHA and Hockey Canada.
