Port Neches Cops District 40-B Championship By Defeating NederlandFor the first time since 1934. the District 40-B championship flag waves over the Purple anil White of Port Neches high school.Led by sparkling Lyman Bernard and bruising James Oreen. the Indian footballers of Port Neches clinched the 1938 district championship Friday afternoon with a 14-0 victory over their grudge rivals, the Nederland Bulldogs.Crowd of 8000The game, marked by continual surprises on the part of both teams was played before a crowd of approximately 3600, one of the largest ever to attend a game at Port Neches.Although the score shows a decisive margin for Coach Claude Stone's Indians, the contest wasanything but a ^ne-slded aJfalr, the Bulldogs showed an ever threatening attack against their favored rivals. Twice, the charges of Coach I. B .Griffith moved within the Indian five-yard stripe only'to be turned back by some sterling play 0n the part of the Redskin line.*econ$ qugrter drove to the Indian one-yard marker before losing the ball Jnst short of a first down. ,58-Yard MarchPort Neches. with Bernard accounting for all but four yards, marched 63 yards to the opening touchdown. After receiving the klckoff the Bulldog# moved to the Indian four'yard stripe In two plays. On the first. Gullbeaux gained two yards, but on the second Broussard dropped a long pass Into the arms of Wills, and the latter treked It to the four-yard line before Bernard polled him down from behind. On the second play, a fumble recovered by Bernard ended the drive.Four minutes before the final whistle, the Indiana scored again, Delahoussaye firing an 11-yard pass to Landry to climax a drive from the Bulldog 26.
