OTTAWA (IT) — With a well-established schedule of international events for its top-rated athletes, the Canadian Figure Skating Association is looking to the United States as a training ground for its future stars. So association president Bruce Miller of Winnipeg, executive director Lou Lefaive and three vice-presidents met during Skate Canada in Victoria last month with their C.S. counterparts to talk about aseries of Canada-U.S. events for developing talent. There was no talk of reviving the North American championships, Lefaive said here recently. What is sought is greater North-South competition to balance the extensive traffic east and west between North America and Kurope. While Canada and the United States are considered strong powers in figure skating, athletes from both countries have to spendlong periods in Kurope to find the level of competition necessary for growth.Because of the expense of such travel, developing skaters in both countries get little opportunity to compete against good international talent outside their own areas.“With the Americans so close, we've often said we have to get together some day, says Lefaive. “We'd like to have more competitions at the lower level in the spirit of helping each other.
